ROLLA, Mo. – A pair of Missouri S&T student-athletes – Nathan Swadley and Andrew Lofgren – were named today as the Scholar-Athletes of the Year in their respective sports by the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Swadley, a junior majoring in mechanical engineering at Missouri S&T and the GLVC's Field Athlete of the Year for the 2021 outdoor season, was named as the men's track & field recipient for the second consecutive season.  Swadley tied or broke three school records in the throws during the 2021 campaign, setting new marks in the outdoor shot put with a  mark of 58-7½ that earned him a berth to the NCAA Division II Championships and a throw of 173-1 in the discus.

Swadley also tied his own school record in the indoor shot put with a mark of 56-9¼ and became just the second individual in GLVC history to sweep the shot put, discus and hammer throw at the same conference meet.  He would go on to place 11^th in the shot put at the NCAA Division II Championships in May.

A year ago, Swadley was the only sophomore named to the Academic All-District team for District 4; this year's team will announced later this summer.  Earlier this week, he was named to the GLVC's All-Academic team for the third time and was a recipient of the Brother James Gaffney Distinguished Scholar Award for the 2020-21 academic year as he landed that honor for the second time in his S&T career.

Lofgren, a junior on the men's cross country team, earned his first GLVC Scholar-Athlete Award following a season in which he finished as the Miners' top runner in two of the three races on the season – including the A-race at the GLVC Championships.  He had a fourth place showing in the season opener at the GLVC Pod 4 Tri-Meet hosted by Southwest Baptist with a time of 26:44 over eight kilometers and finished 14^th at the GLVC West Division race.

Lofgren, who is majoring in geological engineering at Missouri S&T, recorded his fastest time of the 2020 GLVC Championships of 26:34.  He also competed in track & field in the spring for the Miners' GLVC championship squad and scored for S&T with a seventh place showing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Swadley and Lofgren are the 17^th and 18^th student-athletes from Missouri S&T to be selected as winners of the GLVC's Scholar-Athlete award since the Miner program became a member of the conference in 2005.

The GLVC released all 22 of its Scholar-Athlete winners today as many of the fall sport seasons were moved into the spring semester.  Missouri S&T was one of four schools along with Indianapolis, Drury and Lewis to have multiple student-athletes selected.
