ROLLA, MO- The Miners (12-5, 12-5 GLVC) got their biggest win of the season tonight when they took down the Panther of Drury (8-9, 8-9 GLVC) in four sets and claiming the GLVC West Division in the process.
After dropping the first set 25-11, S&T did a complete 180; after looking a 7-5 deficit in the second set, the Miners would go on a 9-2 run that would see kills from
Avery Reed (Ste. Genevieve, Mo./Ste. Genevieve),
Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) and
Shelby Ply (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) to give S&T a 14-9 lead.
That lead would be further pushed out after consecutive kills from Gannaway,
Jordan Burton (Olathe, Kansas/Olathe South Senior High), and
Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) and put the Miners at an 18-11 advantage.
Looking at a 20-15 deficit, the Panthers made a run to tie the set at 20-20 before the Miners turned on the gears and scored the final five points of the set to take a 25-20 set two win and tie the match at 1-1.
Things took a turn in the third set. Drury made a run to take the lead at 15-11 after back-to-back kills from Makina Wratten and Tayte Kozlowski.
The Miners would fight from behind with a 6-0 run that was capped off with a kill from
Avery Reed (Ste. Genevieve, Mo./Ste. Genevieve) to put S&T up 24-22. While DU was able to fight off one set point, an error from the Panthers would give the Miners the 25-23 set two win.
Much like the second set, the Miners found themselves down early and having to fight from behind.
The Miners would take the lead off a four-point run late in the set for the 20-16 lead. S&T would push to a 24-20 lead and match point. Once again, the Panthers fought off the Miners, but
Jordan Burton (Olathe, Kansas/Olathe South Senior High) put down one last kill to give the Miners the 25-22 set four win and the 3-1 match win.
