ROLLA, MO- Playing in their final match of the regular season, the Miners (12-6, 12-6 GLVC) welcomed the Hawks of Rockhurst University to Gibson Arena. S&T fell early in the match and was not able to stage a comeback and fell to RU 3-1.
The Miners and Hawks opened the first set going back and forth for control of the match.
Looking at a 7-7 tie, Rockhurst went on a 5-0 run to get a 12-7 lead over the Miners. While S&T tried to fight their way back into the game, the Hawks would go on another7-2 run to further extend their lead out to 21-13.
S&T fought off two set points with a kill from
Jordan Burton (Olathe, Kansas/Olathe South Senior High) and a block from
Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy), but RU would get a kill from Morgan Conner to seal the deal and give the Hawks the 25-18 set one win.
After falling 25-16 in the second set, S&T flipped the script on the Hawks in the third set.
Both teams would go on mini runs before the Miners were able to pull away from the Hawks.
S&T got their first big lead of the night when Payton Gannawat started the run with a service ace.
Madelyn Mason (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) and
Shelby Ply (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) added in a double block and a kill each while
Abigail Widiker (Hammond, Wis./Saint Croix Central) chipped in a service ace of her own to give the Miners the 21-17 lead.
Another kill from Mason and
Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy), along with a double block from O'Boyle and Gannaway, put the Miners up 24-19. While RU was able to fight off set point once,
Jordan Burton (Olathe, Kansas/Olathe South Senior High) forced a fourth set when she put down a kill to give S&T the 25-20 set three win.
Once again, the Miners found themselves fighting from behind in the fourth set. They fought their way back into the set twice; going on a 5-0 run to tie the set at 13-13 and then again late in the set to make it a 23-22 Rockhurst advantage.
While
Madelyn Mason (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) put down back-to-back kills to keep the Miners in the game at 24-23, Rockhurst would get the match win off a kill from Kenzie Hines and hand the Miners the 25-23 set four loss and the 3-1 match loss.
Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) and
Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) led the way for the Miners with eight kills each while
Jordan Burton (Olathe, Kansas/Olathe South Senior High) added in seven kills.
Madelyn Mason (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) chipped in six kills tonight while
Abigail Widiker (Hammond, Wis./Saint Croix Central) and
Shelby Ply (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) recorded five kills each.
O'Boyle and Ply had big days at the net tonight' O'Boyle recorded three solo blocks and six assists blocks while Ply got a solo block of her own and assisted on five.
Meiko Pearson (Overland Park, Kansas/Blue Valley Northwest) led the way with 13 digs while
Hannah Merjil (Bakersfield, CA/Garces Memorial) and
Katarina Seres (Belgrade, Serbia/Ninth Gymnasium) recorded a combined 33 assists.
