ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's baseball team will look to keep itself among the top four teams in the Great Lakes Valley Conference's Green Division as it returns to the Kansas City area for a four-game series against William Jewell that will begin Saturday in Liberty, Mo.
The series, which was originally scheduled to begin Friday but was moved due to forecasted inclement weather moving into the area late in the week, will start with a single game at 3:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon. The Miners and Cardinals will face off in a Sunday doubleheader beginning at noon and a single game on Monday that will also start at noon.
Missouri S&T rebounded from dropping the first two games of its series at Rockhurst last weekend by sweeping a doubleheader on Sunday to gain a split of the four-game set to hold onto the fourth place spot in the Green Division standings. The Miners are 9-11 in GLVC play heading into the weekend, percentage points in back of Rockhurst for third and a game and a half in front of fifth place Southwest Baptist, whom the Miners will host next weekend.
S&T, 13-15 overall, bounced back in the series thanks to the pitching of
Cade Meier (Dakota, IL/Dakota) in game one Sunday as he allowed just one earned run in five innings and a trio of hurlers that combined on an eight-hit shutout in the series finale.
Dylan Mollett (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) threw the first 4 1/3 innings of that game to improve to 3-0 on the season and has dropped his earned run average to 4.50.
Meier has an ERA of 5.45 following his outing at Rockhurst and leads the pitching staff with 34 strikeouts in 38 innings of work, while
Rian Markes (Columbia, MO/Father Tolton) has fanned 30 in 34 innings. Meanwhile,
David Kephart (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley Northwest) picked up his second save of the season in closing out Meier's win in game one.
At the plate,
Will Hayes (Terre Haute, IN/South Vigo) leads the Miners with a .396 batting average and is third in the GLVC with 16 stolen bases, while
Michael Ward (Hazelwood, MO/Hazelwood West) has a .392 average with a team-high seven home runs and leads the conference with his on-base percentage mark of .562; Ward's .811 slugging percentage mark also ranks among the league leaders.
Andrew Branson (St. James, MO/St. James) is hitting .338 on the year, while
Garrett Weiner (Alton, IL/Marquette) is batting .322 and leads the Miners with 26 runs batted in. The Miners are hitting .307 as a team, the fourth-best average in the GLVC and one spot ahead of their weekend opponent, William Jewell, who is hitting .302 as a unit.
Cole Conner leads the Cardinals (10-18, 8-16 GLVC) with a .363 average, while Anthony Hansen is batting .356 with four home runs and Jake Wilcox is hitting .350 with a team-high 14 stolen bases. Alex Epp leads Jewell with 27 runs batted in and is tied with Hansen for the team lead in homers.
Shane Cavallo, who has made seven starts along with Thomas Hennelly, has a 2-2 record and 4.06 earned run average on the season with 36 strikeouts, while Hennelly has fanned 31 hitters in 40 1/3 innings.
