KIRKSVILLE, MO- The Miners got a big boost today, taking back-to-back wins against Truman State today with 15-7 and 13-3 wins.
GAME ONE: MISSOURI S&T: 15, TRUMAN STATE: 7
The Miners bats had a Field Day in the opening game of the doubleheader; S&T struck first in game one, getting a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning off a double steal attempt. With
Holli Finnell (Nolensville, Tenn./Nolensville) on 1
st base and
Hannah Antzoulatos (Planfield, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) on 3
rd base, Finnell took off for 2
nd; at the same time, Antzoulatos trotted to home plate and slide in safely to give S&T the lead.
They would follow that up with a five-spot in the top of the third inning.
After
Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) reached on a Truman error, Maddy Passolano singled to right field, and
Elizabeth Viox (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) reached on a run-out bunt,
Taylor Caton (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West) sent a ball into right-center field to bring Baxter and Passolano home to extend the Miners lead out to 3-0.
Bryn Wooldridge (Salisbury, Mo./Salisbury) would send Viox home on a single to left field and make it a 4-0 ballgame.
Keeley Morgan and
Marcy McCalla (Staunton, IL/Staunton) would record an RBI each when Morgan hit a sac fly to center field to allow Caton to tag up and score and McCalla singled through the left side and brought
Hannah Antzoulatos (Planfield, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) home to push their lead out to 6-0.
The Miners bats didn't stop there; they added eight more runs in the top of the fourth inning that included a three-run homerun from
Holli Finnell (Nolensville, Tenn./Nolensville) and hits from six different S&T batters, to take a commanding 14-0 lead.
Truman added two runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning, but the Miners added one more run in the top of the fifth when Maddy Passolano doubled down the left field line and brought
Holli Finnell (Nolensville, Tenn./Nolensville) across home plate for the 15-2 lead.
The Bulldogs tried to make a comeback in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring five runs and trying to force more innings of play, but S&T's defense held steady and took the 15-7 win.
Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) picked up her first win of the season going a full 5.0 innings with two strikeouts.
GAME TWO: MISSOURI S&T: 13, TRUMAN STATE: 3
The Miners hot streak continued into game two when Maddy Passolano opened the game with a solo homerun in the top of the first inning.
Holli Finnell (Nolensville, Tenn./Nolensville) would tack on another run for the Miners when she doubled to right-center field and brought
Elizabeth Viox (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) across home plate for the 2-0 lead.
Truman would take their first lead of the day in the bottom half of the third inning when they walked a run in to cut their deficit to 2-1. The very next batter for the Bulldogs, Lauren Stade, would send a ball down the right field line to bring in two more runs and take the 3-2 lead.
S&T would regain their lead in the top of the fourth inning after
Chloe Saltijeral (North Aurora, Ill./Rosary) hit a sac fly into right field that would allow
Hannah Antzoulatos (Planfield, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) to tag up from 3
rd base and
Kate Baxter's (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) single through the right side to bring
Bryn Wooldridge (Salisbury, Mo./Salisbury) home for the 4-3 lead.
The Miners added in two more runs in the top of the fifth inning and another in the sixth that included a solo homerun from
Taylor Caton (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West) to push their lead out to 7-3.
Chloe Saltijeral (North Aurora, Ill./Rosary) and
Taylor Caton (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West) would put the cap on the Miners win in the top of the seventh when they both hit homeruns. With
Emily Davidson (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) on 1
st base, Saltijeral sent a ball over the left field fence to make it a 9-3 game.
Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield), Maddy Passolano, and
Elizabeth Viox (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) would all reach base after Saltijerals homerun and would all get sent across home plate when
Taylor Caton (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West) hit a grand slam into left field to give the Miners the 13-3 lead and eventual win.
Charlye Rowland (Pearcy, Ark./Lake Hamilton) got the start for game two going 3.1 innings while recording two strikeouts.
Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) (2-5) gets credited the win while going 1.2 innings and holding the Bulldogs to just one hit and recording one strikeout. Bryn Wooldride finished the last 2.0 innings of work in the circle with three recorded strikeouts and just one hit against her.
