Miners Split Home Opener with Cardinals

ROLLA, MO- Fresh off back-to-back wins against Truman State, the Miners welcomed the Cardinals of William Jewell to the S&T Softball Field. While WJC took game one by a final score of 8-6, the Miners came back in game two with a bang, taking the 7-1 win.

GAME ONE: MISSOURI S&T: 6, WILLIAM JEWELL: 8
William Jewell started off hot to start game one, taking a 6-1 lead after the first three innings of play.

The Miners bats caught fire in the bottom half of the fourth inning that started with a single down the left-field line from Keeley Morgan. After Hannah Antzoulatos (Planfield, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) made it on base as well, Charlye Rowland (Pearcy, Ark./Lake Hamilton) cut S&T deficit to four after she hit a single into center field and brought Morgan home.

The very next batter, Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield), ripped a single down the left-field line to bring Antzoulatos around the bases and cut the Cardinals lead to 6-3. Taylor Caton (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West) put the Miners down by just one after she hit a deep ball into right field that sent Rowland and Baxter across home plate to make it a 6-5 game.

While WJC added in another run in the top of the 6th inning, Taylor Caton (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West) would drive in another run in the bottom half of the inning when she hit a sac-fly out to left field that would allow Maddy Passolano to tag up from third base and score.

The Cardinals got one more run in the top of the 7th inning to extend their lead out to 8-6 giving S&T one last chance to make a comeback.

Keeley Morgan reached base after a single to right field, but they were unable to connect for more runs and suffered the 8-6 loss.

All S&T batters picked up at least one hit today with Maddy Passolano, Elizabeth Viox (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville), Keeley Morgan, and Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) all recording two hits each.

Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) got the start in game one getting 2.0 innings of work while Charlye Rowland (Pearcy, Ark./Lake Hamilton) got 5.0 innings in the circle with four strikeouts recorded.

GAME TWO: MISSOURI S&T: 7, WILLIAM JEWELL: 1
S&T's offense came to life in the second game of the series.

The Miners took an early 1-0 lead after Bryn Wooldridge (Salisbury, Mo./Salisbury) singled to right field and drove Taylor Caton (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West) across home plate.

Missouri S&T added to their lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning after Elizabeth Viox (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) scored off a wild pitch to make it a 2-0 game. Holli Finnell (Nolensville, Tenn./Nolensville) would add in another run for the Miners to extend their lead to 3-0.

S&T picked up another run in the bottom of the 4th inning with the double steal; just as Maddy Passolano stole second base, Chloe Saltijeral (North Aurora, Ill./Rosary) was able to steal home and push their lead out to 4-0.

After picking up another run in the bottom of the 5th inning, Bryn Wooldridge (Salisbury, Mo./Salisbury) secured the game for the Miners in the bottom of the 6th when she hit a single up the middle and sent Maddy Passolano and Elizabeth Viox (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) across the plate to take the 7-1 lead and the eventual win.

Bryn Wooldridge (Salisbury, Mo./Salisbury) picked up the win for the second game going 6.0 innings and allowing just four hits. Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) finished the last inning with one strikeout and just one hit.
