Miners Hold On for 78-70 Win Over Maryville

ROLLA, MO- The Miners snapped a five-game losing skid tonight with a 78-70 thrilling win over the Saints of Maryville University.

Things started out even between the teams, going back and forth and looking at a 9-9 tie just two minutes into the game. S&T would get their first big offensive push of the night with Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) sank two lay-ups and Eryn Puett (Columbia, MO/Rock Bridge) drained a three-pointer from the far corner to push their lead out to seven.

Maryville would attempt to get back within reach of the Miners with consecutive three-pointer from Jayda Jansen, but the Miners would finish the final five minutes of the opening quarter on a 12-3 run that gave them a 30-20 lead.

S&T's offense continued to shine into the second quarter, extending their lead out to as much as 15 after a lay-up from Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) with 7:26 remaining in the half.

But, the Saints woes soon disappeared when they got back-to-back three-pointers from Jansen and Antoinette Mussorici and a lay-up from Karlee Feldman to cut their deficit to six. An almost three minute scoring drought would come about for both teams and was finally broken with 43 seconds left in the half when Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) picked a pass from Rylee Mulvaney and scored an easy lay-up to put the Miners up 43-35 heading into halftime.

The Miners would get their largest lead of the game in the third quarter when Kristen Keys (St. Louis, MO/Westminster Christian Academy) drained the long three-pointer from the top of the key to give S&T a cushiony 66-47 lead. The Saints would add in two free-throws from Jayda Jansen with 11 seconds left in the quarter to cut into their deficit and make it a 66-49 game heading into the final 10 minutes of play.

Maryville made it interesting in the fourth quarter; while they outscored the Miners 21-12 and went on a 12-0 run late in the quarter to get within six of the Miners, S&T's offense held steady. Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) added in two late lay-ups while Kristen Keys (St. Louis, MO/Westminster Christian Academy) sank a free-throw to give the Miners the 78-70 win.

Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy), who has a history of playing well against the Saints, rained in a team-high 21 points while grabbing eight rebounds and adding in three blocks. Kristen Keys (St. Louis, MO/Westminster Christian Academy) and Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) added in 15 and 14, respectively, while Rodriguez had a career night with nine assists.

As a team, Missouri S&T (3-12, 3-12 GLVC) shot 50.8% from the field while dishing out a season best19 assists.
