ROLLA, Mo. – After spotting Webster the first basket of the game Wednesday night, Missouri S&T rattled off the next 18 points and never looked back as it routed the Gorloks 95-56 at Gibson Arena.
Webster got the opening basket of the contest from Karl Moore, but beginning with a
Kaden Froebe (Lincoln, IL/Lincoln) put-back, the Miners started their longest scoring run of the season to take control of the game. Froebe scored six of the first 10 points in the run –
Mahamadou Kaba-Camera (Conakry, Guinea/Balboa City (San Diego, CA)) had the other four on a pair of dunks – before
Julien Smith (Fort Worth, TX/Northwest) scored six of the final eight with a short jumper by
Dylan Singleton (Lincoln, IL/Lincoln) thrown in.
The Miners (3-5) kept the Gorloks (1-7) off the scoreboard for over five and one-half minutes during the run and would maintain a double figure lead throughout the remainder of the first half, building it to as much as 21 on two occasions before taking a 44-27 lead to the locker room.
S&T connected on 17 of its 30 shots in the first half (56.7 percent) and forced 10 Webster turnovers along the way.
The Gorloks, who lost a 12-point decision at Southeast Missouri State just four days ago, trimmed the S&T down to 11 early in the second half. Webster was within 13 with 12:36 to play after Nate Jones made one-of-two at the free throw line, but the Miners proceeded to put the game out of reach with an 11-0 burst that included a pair of three-pointers from Smith.
S&T had three runs of at least 10 points in length in the contest – the 18-0 run in the first half, the 11-0 run midway through the half and a 14-0 surge late in the game.
Smith matched his season high with 26 points in the game and also surpassed the 500-point mark for his career along the way, as he reached that mark in the second-fewest games in program history. S&T also got a season-high 15 points from
Saheem Anthony (Brooklyn, NY/Westinghouse) as well as 11 points from Froebe and 10 more from
Alex Strating (Wassenaar, Netherlands/American School of the Hague).
Missouri S&T shot 52.9 percent in the game and made 11-of-18 from three-point range, while also outrebounding the Gorloks by a 49-30 margin.
Mark Moore led three players in double figures for Webster with 12 points.
The Miners will play host to Westminster Saturday in a 3 p.m. contest at Gibson Arena.
