Miners use carbon copy performance to down Westminster

ROLLA, Mo. – Facing a team from the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for the second straight game, Missouri S&T's men's basketball team used a similar script as it did on Wednesday to record another victory Saturday afternoon as it downed Westminster 94-57 at Gibson Arena.

Just like on Wednesday, the Miners gave up the first points of the game on a three-point basket by Landon Harrison, then rattled off 13 straight points and never trailed again as they improved to 4-5 on the year.

Julien Smith (Fort Worth, TX/Northwest) did much of the early damage for the Miners, as he scored 10 of the 13 points during the early run on a pair of three-point baskets and a pair of jumpers to help give S&T an early 10-point advantage.  The Miners would increase that lead to as much as 20 in the first half after Saheem Anthony (Brooklyn, NY/Westinghouse) drained a three-point shot, one of seven made by S&T in the first half and of the 16 made during the contest, as the Miners shot over 50 percent from beyond the arc for the second game in succession.

After outscoring the Blue Jays (4-6) 42-29 in the first half, the Miners shot 56.7 percent after the intermission as they outscored Westminster 52-28 over the final 20 minutes.  Missouri S&T built its lead to as much as 40 points during the second half, including one stretch where it outscored the visitors 26-6.

Smith led all scorers in the contest with 20 points, while Micah Johnson (Ankeny, IA/Centennial) scored a career-high 15 – making all four of his three-point shots along the way – and Anthony ended up with 14.  Smith also had six assists and three steals in the game, while Kevin Legardy (Las Vegas, NV/Canyon Springs) also dished out five assists.

Westminster shot just 31.7 percent from the floor in the game and made only five of its 23 attempts from three-point range.  Harrison was the only Blue Jay to finish in double figures with 20 points.

Missouri S&T will return to action on Dec. 20 when it hosts Culver-Stockton in a 3 p.m. contest at Gibson Arena.
