BOLIVAR, Mo. – Missouri S&T was unable to overcome a 17-2 first half run by Southwest Baptist Saturday afternoon, as the Bearcats went on to post a 70-51 win over the Miners in a Great Lakes Valley Conference men's basketball contest at the Meyer Sports Center.
The Miners (2-5, 1-2 GLVC) trailed 17-16 with 12:12 to play in the first half after
Kevin Legardy (Las Vegas, NV/Canyon Springs) drained a three-point shot, but the Bearcats (7-1, 3-0 GLVC) went on their run over the next six minutes to put S&T into a 16-point hole and never looked back to send the Miners to their second straight loss.
SBU shot 52.9 percent in the first and made nine three-point baskets over the first 20 minutes, but also grabbed eight offensive rebounds in the half that led to 14 second chance points. Three of the offensive rebounds came during the decisive run as did three of SBU's nine three-pointers in the half.
S&T did hold the Bearcats – the top shooting team in the GLVC entering play on Saturday – to just 27.6 percent from the field in the second half, but shot only 36.8 percent in the game and made only four-of-18 from beyond the arc. The Miners also outrebounded SBU 33-30, including a 24-11 differential in the second half in their favor, with
Kaden Froebe (Lincoln, IL/Lincoln) pulling down a season-high 12 boards for S&T.
Julien Smith (Fort Worth, TX/Northwest) was the only Miner to finish in double figures in the scoring column with 14 points on the afternoon.
The Miners return to action Wednesday when they host Webster in a 7 p.m. game at Gibson Arena.
