ROLLA, Mo. – Recording the fastest times in nine of the 11 events, Missouri S&T's swimming team closed out its fall semester schedule by taking a 122-78 decision Friday over Missouri-St. Louis at the S&T Pool.
S&T won every event with the exception of the 200-yard freestyle, where UMSL's Jon Osa edged S&T's
Marcelo Busch (Sao Centrano Do Sui-Sp, Brazil/Colegio Ateneu) and the 200-yard freestyle relay where Osa – a NCAA Division II provisional qualifier in five events this season – got to the wall just 0.39 seconds ahead of S&T's
Aidan Walters (Olathe, KS/Olathe East) in the anchor leg.
Martin Melinder (Upplands Vasby, Sweden) won both distance freestyle races Friday, winning the 1,000-freestyle in 9:45.32 and the 500-freestyle in 4:46.33, where he edged teammate
Alex Graham (Parker, TX/Homeschooled) by 0.01 seconds.
Nolan Fergus (Aurora, IL/Marmion Academy) also had a pair of event wins as he captured the 50-yard freestyle in 21.51 seconds and 100-yard butterfly in 50.39 seconds.
The Miners also got winning efforts from
Nate Baxter (St. Charles, IL/St. Charles North) in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:54.93,
Alec Davis (Joplin, MO/Joplin) in the 100-yard freestyle in 47.07 seconds and
Noah Clancy (Alton, IL/Alton) in the 100-yard backstroke in 49.31 seconds, while
Andy Huffman (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit) posted the fastest time in the 100-yard breaststroke of 58.07 seconds.
Missouri S&T won the 200-yard medley relay as the team of Clancy, Huffman, Baxter and Gabe Asevedo took the race in a time of 1:32.81, while Walters anchored the second place finishing 200-freestyle relay team that included Clancy, Davis and Fergus. That quartet finished with a time of 1:24.61.
Graham was second to Melinder in the 1,000-freestyle as well as he recorded a time of 9:46.42. S&T also had second place showings from Busch in the 200-freestyle in 1:44.31, Asevedo in the 50-freestyle in 21.62 seconds, Baxter in the 100-butterfly in 51.26 seconds and
Mark Cavanaugh (Papillion, NE/Papillion-LaVista) in the 100-backstroke in 52.40 seconds.
Chris Sprenger (Shawnee, KS/Mill Valley) had the second-fastest mark in the 100-breaststroke of 58.31 seconds.
Third place finishes were posted by Davis in the 200-freestyle in 1:44.84, Huffman in the 200-IM in 1:55.83, Asevedo in the 100-freestyle in 47.89 seconds and Walters in the 100-backstroke in 52.67 seconds, while
Jay Mercer's (Kansas City, MO/Whitefield Academy) time of 58.86 seconds was the third-fastest in the 100-breaststroke.
The Miners will resume competition on Jan. 14 when they host Truman State at the S&T Pool.
