ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's basketball team will look to get its first victory of 2021 Saturday when it returns to Gibson Arena to face Quincy in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The Miners and Hawks come into Saturday's game with nearly identical records – S&T is 2-7 and Quincy is 2-6 – and are coming off losses in their most recent outings. Missouri S&T shot just 27.9 percent from the field as it lost Wednesday at Rockhurst 74-53, while Quincy lost an 83-77 decision to Southern Indiana two days after posting a win over Indianapolis.
The Miners had only two players in double figures in Wednesday's loss as
Kaden Froebe (Lincoln, IL/Lincoln) and
Dawson Berry (Centralia, IL/Centralia) finished with 10 points apiece. S&T has a trio of players averaging in double figures heading into the weekend, led by
Julien Smith (Fort Worth, TX/Northwest) and his average of 17.3 points per game that ranks ninth in the GLVC. Smith is also tied for the GLVC lead with 24 three-point baskets and is shooting 35.8 percent from beyond the arc.
Kevin Legardy (Las Vegas, NV/Canyon Springs) is averaging 14.6 points per contest and is also the Miners' rebounding leader with 6.6 per game, while
Mitch Fairless (St. Charles, MO/Duchesne) is scoring 13.4 points a game. Froebe, who is shooting 51.5 percent from the field on the season, leads the GLVC with 24 steals and also leads S&T with 40 assists as he ranks eighth in the conference in assists per game.
ABOUT QUINCY: The Hawks enter Saturday's contest with a 2-6 record following Tuesday's 83-77 loss to Southern Indiana, despite getting a combined 57 points from Viktor Kovacevic, Tanner Stuckman and Charles Callier. Quincy trailed by 13 with nine minutes to play and trimmed that margin down to one with under four minutes left, but was unable to get any closer down the stretch.
Stuckman currently ranks fourth in the GLVC in scoring with an average of 21.1 points per game and is also third in the conference in field goal percentage as he is making 65.3 percent of his attempts from the floor. Kovacevic ranks 11th in scoring with his mark of 17 points per game, while Callier is averaging 11.8 points per contest.
All three are threats from three-point range, as Stuckman has a team-high 22 and is hitting 52.4 percent of his attempts, while Kovacevic is shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc and Callier has made 19 at a clip of 37.3 percent. The Hawks currently rank second in the GLVC with 11.3 three-point baskets per game.
After opening the season with four straight losses, the Hawks have split their last four games which included an overtime loss at nationally ranked Truman State. Quincy defeated Indianapolis 83-73 on Sunday in its first game back from the holiday break behind Stuckman's 23 points.
