KIRKSVILLE, MO- On the road for the first time in 2021, the Miners looked to get a win over Truman State (6-2, 6-2 GLVC). While S&T started off hot, the Bulldogs would make a second half comeback and hand the Miners the 83-71 loss.
S&T's defense held strong from the beginning, forcing the Bulldogs into 12 first half turnovers and converting that into 14 unanswered points.
Along with their lockdown defense, the Miners offense shined; they hit 4-7 from long range and went 4-4 to open play getting made buckets from
Kristen Keys (St. Louis, MO/Westminster Christian Academy),
Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones),
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township), and
Jada Lindesmith (St. Peters, MO/Lutheran).
The Miners jumped out to a 12-7 lead mid-way through the first quarter after Keys drained a 15-foot jumper from the wing.
TSU would make a short run of their own with a lay-up from Allison Thomas and a three-pointer from Tiffany Davenport to tie the game at 12-12.
While the teams traded buckets, S&T would get their largest lead of the quarter after back-to-back three-pointers from
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) and
Jada Lindesmith (St. Peters, MO/Lutheran) to make it a 20-14 game. But Truman State wasn't going away that easy. Hannah Pinkston drained a three-pointer from the far corner just as time expired to cut the Miners lead to 20-17 heading into the second quarter.
S&T kept the intensity going into the second quarter, opening with a 6-2 run to push their lead out to 26-19.
The Miners and Bulldogs would coast through much of the quarter, neither team able to stop the other's offense.
Truman State got within two of the Miners with just over three minutes left in the half when Maya Mouton sank a free-throw and a lay-up to make it a 30-28 game.
The Bulldogs would add one more lay-up before the half while the Miners got a free-throw from
Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) and a short jumper from
Kristen Keys (St. Louis, MO/Westminster Christian Academy) to take a 33-30 lead at the half.
Things took a turn in the third quarter; Truman State's offense lit up, putting up 32 points in the 10-minute span.
S&T held on for as long as they could, keeping their lead until 7:29 left in the quarter when Hannah Belanger found Ellie Weltha on the block and gave the Bulldogs a 39-38 lead. From that points, TSU would outscore the Miners 25-15 and take a 62-53 lead going into the final 10 minutes of the game.
Missouri S&T did all they could to get back in the game in the fourth quarter. After getting back within seven of the Bulldogs after a jumpshot from the wing from
Kristen Keys (St. Louis, MO/Westminster Christian Academy), Truman State would push their lead back out to double-digits and keep it there for the rest of the game and eventually taking the 83-71 win.
Kristen Keys (St. Louis, MO/Westminster Christian Academy) had a career day leading all scorers with 27 points while going 11-19 from the floor.
Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) and
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) both scored in double-digits tonight, adding in 17 and 10 points, respectively.
As a team, Missouri S&T (2-8, 2-8 GLVC) finished the game shooting 39.4% from the field and forced the Bulldogs into 18 turnovers while committing a season low eight.
