ROLLA, MO- After a heartbreaking loss to Truman State on Thursday, the Miners looked to pick up a home win against the Cardinals of William Jewell (4-6, 4-6 GLVC). While S&T started off on a positive note, the Cardinals offense came back strong in the second half and took the 73-67 win.
After WJC opened the game with a quick lay-up from Kiara Bradley, the Miners went on a 7-0 run that was capped by a completed three-point play from
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) with 5:07 remaining in the quarter.
S&T would score on their next four consecutive trips down the floor, all assisted by
Kristin Steins (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway South), to push their lead out to 17-8.
Macyn Wilbers added in four more points before the end of the quarter for Jewell to cut their deficit to five. But,
Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) drained a jumper just before the buzzer to put the Miners up 19-12 after the opening 10 minutes.
William Jewell's offense caught fire to open the second quarter, outscoring S&T 13-4 in the first three minutes to take a 25-23 lead. Both teams would trade baskets the rest of the quarter and look at a 33-33 score heading into the break.
The Miners caught some momentum to open the second half; after
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) sank two free-throws and
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) caught a steal and a fast break lay-up,
Eryn Puett (Columbia, MO/Rock Bridge) drained a three-pointer from the top of the key to give S&T the 40-33 lead.
But, the Cardinals came charging right back, going on an 11-0 run to regain their lead with 2:41 left in the quarter. The Miners kept pace with WJC, but would face a 56-51 deficit heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
S&T kept within reaching distance of the Cardinals in the fourth quarter, but four late free-throws from Ainsley Tolson and Kiara Bradley would secure the 73-67 win for Jewell and hand the Miners their nineth loss of the season.
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) led the way for the Miners today with 17 points and three steals while going 3-6 from long range while
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) picked up her 6
th double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) chipped in 12 points while
Kristen Keys (St. Louis, MO/Westminster Christian Academy) and
Eryn Puett (Columbia, MO/Rock Bridge) both added in nine points.
As a team, Missouri S&T (2-9, 2-9 GLVC) shot 42.9% from the field while going 8-19 from long range.
