Box Score KANSAS CITY, MO- Starting their first weekend of 2021 on the road, the Miners headed to Kansas City to take on the Hawks of Rockhurst University. While S&T started off hot and would erase a 15 point deficit in the third quarter, the Hawks explosive fourth quarter would prove too much to handle and S&T would face the 82-57 loss.
S&T opened the game shooting just over 43% from the field and went 3-6 from beyond the arc.
The Miners would look at a 12-6 lead less than three minutes into the game after consecutive baskets from
Kristen Keys (St. Louis, MO/Westminster Christian Academy),
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy), and
Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones). Both teams would trade baskets through the remaining of the quarter until
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) sank two free-throws with 21 seconds left to give the Miners a 20-15 lead.
Rockhurst's offense exploded in the second quarter; the Hawks went 10-17 from the field, including four three pointers
After RU scored the first five points of the quarter, the Hawks would outscore the Miners 23-10 and take a 41-30 lead heading into halftime.
S&T would find themselves down by as much as 15 in the third quarter but would overcome that deficit with a 15-0 run that started with a short jumper from
Kristen Keys (St. Louis, MO/Westminster Christian Academy) with 8:50 left in the quarter.
Keys, Durk, Rodriguez, and Kerr would all contribute in scoring during the 3:55 run and make it a 45-45 game.
The Miners and Hawks would go head-to-head the rest of the third and see RU take a 54-52 lead going into the final 10 minutes of play.
Rockhurst opened the fourth on a 7-0 lead to push their lead back out to nine with 7:48 left.
From that point, the Miners offense struggled to break the Hawks press in the fourth quarter, being held to just two points through the first seven minutes of play. Rockhurst would shoot almost 70% from the floor in the final 10 minutes and force S&T into six turnovers to take the game with a final score of 82-57.
Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) led the way for S&T with 18 points while
Kristen Keys (St. Louis, MO/Westminster Christian Academy) and
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) added in 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) was the final Miner to score in double figures with 10 points.
Missouri S&T (2-10, 2-10 GLVC) finished the game shooting 33.9% from the field.
