Lions Offense Too Much for Miners

JOPLIN, MO- The Miners struggled in their final day of the TMZ Tournament, falling to host school Missouri Southern 7-0 and 14-2.

GAME ONE: MISSOURI S&T: 0, MISSOURI SOUTHERN: 7
While S&T's offense didn't score any runs in game one, their offense was anything but lacking.

The Miners picked up their first base runner in the top of the 1st inning after Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) singled into right-center field. Hannah Antzoulatos (Planfield, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) and Olivia Young (Millstadt, IL/Belleville Township) would both get out while moving Klein over to third base before the defense of MSSU held the Miners offense.

It wouldn't be until the top of the 6th inning until S&T got runners in scoring position again.

Both Marcy McCalla (Staunton, IL/Staunton) and Jacey Allen (Roanoke, TX/Byron Nelson) would pick up hits to reach base before both advancing on a passed ball to put them at second and third. Once again, the defense of the Lions was too strong and held both runners on and kept the Miners scoreless.

Missouri Southern picked up six of their seven runs in the bottom of the 5th inning behind three RBI hits and a two-run homerun from Erika Lutgen. Their seven runs would be enough to hold the Miners and hand them the 7-0 loss.

Six different S&T players picked up hits in game one; Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley), Hannah Antzoulatos (Planfield, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy), Olivia Young (Millstadt, IL/Belleville Township), Marcy McCalla (Staunton, IL/Staunton), Jacey Allen (Roanoke, TX/Byron Nelson), and Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) all accounted for one hit each.

Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) (1-4) got the start today going 5.0 innings with one strikeout.

GAME TWO: MISSOURI S&T: 4, MISSOURI SOUTHERN: 14 (5 INNINGS)
It was all MSSU in game two of the day, recording six runs in the opening inning and collecting a combined eight in the 4th and 5th innings to take the 14-4 win.

S&T picked up their first run of the day behind Ashley Davis' (Erie, IL/Erie) solo homerun in the top of the 2nd inning. On the first pitch she saw, Davis sent a shot over the center field fence to cut the Miner's deficit to 6-1.

The Miners would get three more runs in the top of the 3rd to get within two of the Lions. Ashley Davis (Erie, IL/Erie) brought in her second RBI of the day when she doubled to center field and brought Hannah Antzoulatos (Planfield, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) across home plate. The very next batter, Jacey Allen (Roanoke, TX/Byron Nelson), would get a sac fly out to right field that sent Olivia Young (Millstadt, IL/Belleville Township) home to make it a 6-3 game.

Keely Morgan (Laguna Hills, CA/Laguna Hills) sent in the Miners final run of the game when she doubled to left-center field to bring Ashley Davis (Erie, IL/Erie) home and get S&T within two. Unfortunately, the offense of the Lions would explode in the 4th and 5th innings to hand the Miners the 14-4 loss.

S&T picked up six hits in game two of the day with Ashley Davis (Erie, IL/Erie) leading the way with two hits and two RBI.

Charlye Rowland (Pearcy, Ark./Lake Hamilton) got the start in game two, going 1.2 innings while Avery English (Carterville, IL/Carterville) finished the remaining 3.0 innings with three strikeouts.
