ROLLA, Mo. -- Missouri S&T's men's basketball team heads into its final week of play in the 2019-20 season with a pair of rematches from contests played in January, as the Miners will host Quincy and Truman State in Great Lakes Valley Conference play at Gibson Arena.
S&T will host Quincy Thursday at 7:30 p.m., then take on Truman State Saturday in a 3 p.m. contest that will be part of Phelps County Fan Appreciation Day at Gibson Arena. Fans from Phelps County will be admitted to the doubleheader that begins with the women's game at 1 p.m. free of charge and the first 100 fans will receive rally towels at the gate.
The Miners have dropped five games in succession after falling 92-76 Saturday at the hands of Indianapolis, dropping to 5-19 overall and 3-15 in the GLVC in the process. S&T got 18 points from
Dulan Scott (Chicago, IL/Farragut Academy), including his 1,000th career point and 17 from
Mitch Fairless (St. Charles, MO/Duchesne) in the UIndy contest.
Scott continues to lead the Miners in scoring with an average of 15.7 points per game, while
CJ Hedgepeth (Evansville, IN/Harrison) is scoring 12.4 points per contest and Fairless checks into the game with a mark of 11.3 points a game. Hedgepeth also leads the Miners with 65 assists and
Chima Oduocha (Hoffman Estates, IL/Conant) has a team-best 5.8 rebounds per outing.
ABOUT QUINCY: The Hawks snapped a four-game losing streak and got back to the .500 mark on the year in the process when they knocked off Drury 75-74 Saturday in Quincy. Viktor Kovacevic's basket with two seconds remaining gave the Hawks the victory that improved them to marks of 13-13 overall and 7-11 in the GLVC.
Tanner Stuckman, who scored 28 points in Quincy's win over S&T last month, enters the game as the GLVC's fourth leading scorer with an average of 19 points per game. He is among three Hawks who are averaging in double figures on the season -- although one of them, Austin Downing, has not played in over a month due to an injury.
Charles Callier is the third double figure scorer for the Hawks with his mark of 11.4 points per game and has connected on team-high 49 three-point baskets. Stuckman has made 46 treys and is also Quincy's top rebounder with 5.9 per game, while Aziz Fadika has pulled down 5.8 per game. Ryan Briscoe leads the Hawks with 91 assists.
Quincy beat the Miners 88-81 when the teams met in January, with Stuckman scoring 28 for the Hawks and Hedgepeth posting a career-high 32 for the Miners.
ABOUT TRUMAN STATE: The Bulldogs are in contention for a top-four seed in the upcoming GLVC Tournament -- they are currently second in the league's point ratings index where the top five teams are separated by a narrow margin -- and were ranked second in the NCAA Division II Midwest region prior to losing last Thursday at Drury. On Saturday, Truman rebounded by blasting Southwest Baptist 83-59 behind 19 points from Brodric Thomas, the GLVC's second-leading scorer entering play this week.
Thomas is averaging 20.7 points per game and has done damage from all over the floor, shooting 49 percent overall and 39 percent from three-point range as he has made a team-high 63 treys this season. He is also the Bulldogs' leading rebounder with seven per game.
Cade McKnight is averaging 13.9 points per game for the Bulldogs and Hunter Strait, who has 53 three-pointers this season, is scoring 11 points per contest.Â
Truman used a 20-0 run early in the game to take control and defeated the Miners 86-60 when the teams faced off in Kirksville on Jan. 9.
