Softball Opens Midwest Dome Invitational with Back-to-Back Wins

ROSEMONT, ILL.- The Miners picked up their first two wins of the 2020 season with an 8-2 win over Ashland University and the 3-2 win over Purdue Northwest.

ASHLAND: 2, MISSOURI S&T: 8
S&T's offense exploded in the opening game of the Midwest Regional Dome Invitational, picking up four unearned runs in the 6th inning to secure their 8-2 win.

It all started in the bottom of the 3rd inning when Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) singled up the middle and drove in Emily Davidson (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) to take the 1-0 lead. Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield), the very next batter, would hit a sac fly to left-center that would bring Hannah Antzoulatos (Planfield, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) across home plate. Ashley Davis (Erie, IL/Erie) would bring in one last run for the Miners in the inning when she singled through the right side to bring in Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley).

Ashland would get two runs back in the top of the 4th inning with back-to-back hits from Alexis Lavdis and Lauren McMillin to cut S&T's lead to 3-2.

Baxter would add another run to the Miners lead in the bottom of the 4th when she singled to center field to bring Antzoulatos home.

S&T would add four unearned runs in the bottom of the 6th inning off an Ashland throwing error. Antzoulatos, Klein, Baxter, and Emily Davison would all score in the inning to extend the Miners lead out to 8-2. That would be enough to hold the Eagles and claim their first win of the season.

Six different Miners picked up hits today with Hannah Antzoulatos (Planfield, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) leading the team while going 2-2 and scoring three of the team's eight runs.

Olivia Walter (Catawissa, MO/Cor Jesu Academy) (1-2) picked up the win tonight while going 5.0 innings with five strikeouts and just five hits. Charlye Rowland (Pearcy, Ark./Lake Hamilton) (S, 1) picked up her first save as a Miner while going 2.0 innings with two strikeouts.

PURDUE NORTHWEST: 2, MISSOURI S&T: 3
The Miners picked up their second win of the season after taking the 3-2 game over the Pride of Purdue Northwest.

S&T struck first again, getting a sacrifice fly from Rachel Smith (Monroe City, Mo./Monroe City R-1) in the top of the 4th inning that would drive in Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) to take the 1-0 lead.

The Miners would get two more runs in the top of the 5th inning with back-to-back hits from Hannah Antzoulatos (Planfield, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) and Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley); with Taylor Caton (Ballwin, Mo/Parkway West) on base, Antzoulatos ripped a ball into right-center field that would turn into a triple and drive in Caton to extend the Miners lead out to 2-0. Klein caught a piece of a ball and sent it into right-center field to being Antzoulatos across home plate to make it a 3-0 game.

Purdue Northwest would attempt a comeback in the bottom of the 7th inning, but S&T's defense stepped up and held the Pride just short.

PNW's Ashley Bravo hit a grounder to third base that would send in Taylor Stevens home and cut the Miners lead to 3-1. The Pride would get one last run in the inning when Crystal Carrillo tripled to right-center and brought Remi Ferguson around the bases.
