ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's baseball team will return to the diamond this weekend as it hosts Davenport in a four-game series that will begin with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the S&T Ballpark.
The Miners and Panthers will face off in a doubleheader beginning at 11:30 a.m., then have two more games scheduled in the series at noon on Sunday and 1 p.m. on Monday. It will be the second weekend of play for S&T, who dropped three of four to Minot State last weekend to begin the campaign.
The one win for S&T came in the game started by
Brenden Garza (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt South), who was named as the GLVC's "Pitcher of the Week" after allowing just one hit and one run with four strikeouts in his five innings of work. S&T used 11 pitchers in the four games against Minot State, with
Cade Meier (Dakota, IL/Dakota) striking out seven in his 4 1/3 innings on the hill as well as getting three scoreless innings apiece from
Blaine Dunbar (West Plains, MO/West Plains) and
David Kephart (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley Northwest).
Keegan Baxmeier had six hits in 12 at-bats during the opening weekend that also included a three-run homer in the Miner victory, while
Matt Miller (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) had four hits in 10 at-bats and drove in four runs;
Michael Ward (Hazelwood, MO/Hazelwood West) also drove in four and had S&T's other home run in the series. Meanwhile,
Will Hayes (Terre Haute, IN/South Vigo) reached base eight times and stole three bases along the way.
Davenport also opened its 2020 campaign last weekend and did so by winning two of three over Southern Indiana in Hoover, Ala. After dropping the opening game of the series, the Panthers outscored the Screaming Eagles 24-5 in the final two contests.
Third baseman Jacob Buchberger went seven-of-14 in the USI series and drove in eight runs, while outfielder Nolan Anspaugh went six-of-13 in the leadoff spot in the lineup and stole four bases as well. Dalton O'Boyle threw a team-high five innings in his start and struck out nine while allowing just two hits.
