NASHVILLE, TN- S&T finished up their opening weekend schedule with a single game against Trevecca Nazarene today. While the Miners struck first, the Trojans offense sparked late in the game to make a comeback and hand S&T the 7-2 loss.
The Miners offense got off to a good start thanks in part to
Olivia Young (Millstadt, IL/Belleville Township); after
Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) drew a walk, Young hit a bomb over the centerfield fence to put S&T up 2-0 in the top of the first inning.
S&T was able to hold their lead through the second inning before Trevecca Nazarene struck; after Anna Bennett and Kelsey Seitz both reached base before Alyssa Triner doubled through the left side to tie the game at 2-2. Triner would end up scoring before the inning was over on a double steal to put the Miners down 3-2.
After the Trojans added two more runs in the 3
rd inning to make it a 5-2 game, the Miners would get another shot of scoring in the top of the 5
th.
Rachel Smith (Monroe City, Mo./Monroe City R-1) picked up her first hit of the day when she doubled to centerfield to put S&T in scoring position for the first time since the first inning. Hannah Antzoulatous gave the Miners another baserunner after she reached base on a TNU error. Both would be left on base after both
Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) and
Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) were unable to get past Trojan pitcher Alex Bahnke.
Trevecca Nazarene would add in two more runs in the bottom of the 6
th inning, extending their lead out to 7-2. S&T would get one baserunner in the top of the 7
th to attempt a comeback, but the defense of the Trojans held steady and handed the Miners the 7-2 loss.
Along with Young,
Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley),
Jacey Allen (Roanoke, TX/Byron Nelson), and
Rachel Smith (Monroe City, Mo./Monroe City R-1) picked up hits today.
