ROLLA, MO- A fast start for the Miners proved to not be enough to contain the Bearcats of McKendree University. After a 21-13 fourth quarter, McKendree (1-1, 1-1 GLVC) would come away with the 62-55 win.
S&T jumped all over the Bearcats to open the game; capping a 15-4 run with a steal and fastbreak lay-up from
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) with 6:13 remaining in the quarter and getting their largest lead of the game of 20-6 after
Jada Lindesmith (St. Peters, MO/Lutheran) drained a three-pointer from wing.
McKendree would add in lay-ups from Callie Pohlman, Jenna Krause, and Madison Jones before the end of the opening 10 minutes to make it a 20-12 game.
The Bearcats made their comeback in the second quarter, scoring just 14 points while holding the Miners to just seven and forcing them to shoot under 20% from the field.
While they held S&T to their lowest shooting percentage, McKendree still looked at a 27-26 disadvantage heading into the half.
The Miners and Bearcats traded buckets in the third quarter with four ties and two lead changes during the 10 minutes. Lindesmith would get S&T the lead back with 40 seconds left in the quarter on a fastbreak lay-up.
That 42-41 lead would be the last time the Miners had the lead as McKendree opened the final quarter of play on an 8-2 run. Seven made free-throws from the Bearcats would end up sealing the deal handing the Miners their second loss of the season at 62-55.
Kristen Keys (St. Louis, MO/Westminster Christian Academy) had a career night for the Miners, scoring 16 points while going 3-5 from long range.
Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) chipped in 12 while freshman
Eryn Puett (Columbia, MO/Rock Bridge) went 4-5 from the field for eight points.
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) led all players with 13 rebounds and four blocks.
