ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Missouri S&T's swimming team, back in action in the pool for the first time in nearly two months, came away with a dual meet win Friday afternoon over Missouri-St. Louis to close its first semester schedule and also got its first B-cut of the season along the way.
The Miners won the meet by a count of 720-610 and also got its B-cut from
Alec Davis (Joplin, MO/Joplin), who made the mark in his winning performance in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:40.17, 0.12 seconds below the mark of 1:40.29.
S&T won the first six events of the meet, getting individual event wins from
Alex Graham (Parker, TX/Homeschooled) in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:36.53,
Mark Cavanaugh (Papillion, NE/Papillion-LaVista) in the 100-yard backstroke in 50 seconds flat,
Noah Clancy (Alton, IL/Alton) in the 100-backstroke in 50.03,
Marco Flores (San Pedro Sula, Honduras/SERAN Private Bilingual School) in the 100-yard breaststroke in 56.81 seconds and
Andy Huffman (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit) in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:53.23 along with Davis' 200-yard freestyle victory.
Four Miners earned additional wins later in the meet, with Huffman also winning the 200-yard breaststroke with a mark of 2:04.26 and the 400-yard individual medley in 4:05.66. Davis also won the 100-yard freestyle in 46.60 seconds, Cavanaugh got a second win on the day in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:51.04 and Graham did so in the 500-freestyle in 4:41.37.
Nolan Fergus (Aurora, IL/Marmion Academy) also had a first place showing in the 100-yard butterfly with a winning time of 49.87 seconds.
The Miners also won the 200-yard medley relay behind the quartet of Clancy, Flores, Fergus and
Gabriel Asevedo (Singapore/Canadian International School) with a time of 1:31.59.
Second place finishes were recorded by
Martin Melinder (Upplands Vasby, Sweden/) in the 1,000-free in 9:39.41,
Connor Wiedemeier (West Monroe, LA/West Monroe) in the 200-freestyle in 1:42.09, Fergus in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.69 seconds, Clancy in the 200-backstroke in 1:51.61,
Jay Mercer (Kansas City, MO/Whitefield Academy) in the 200-backstroke in 2:07.21 and 400-IM in 4:08.97 and
Nate Baxter (St. Charles, IL/St. Charles North) in the 100-butterfly in 50.56 seconds.
S&T's 200-yard freestyle relay team of
Cole Akal (Alton, IL/Alton), Clancy, Asevedo and Wiedemeier finished second in that event with its time of 1:25.08.
Mercer finished third in the 100-breaststroke in 57.61 seconds as did Baxter in the 200-butterfly in 1:54.19, Asevedo in the 50-freestyle in 21.92 seconds, Wiedemeier in the 100-freestyle in 47.26 seconds, Melinder in the 500-freestyle in 4:42.96,
Aidan Walters (Olathe, KS/Olathe East) in the 200-backstroke in 1:53.17 and
Chris Sprenger (Shawnee, KS/Mill Valley) in the 200-breaststroke in 2:07.60.
The Miners' next competition will take place on Jan. 8 when it hosts McKendree at the S&T Pool.
