KIRKSVILLE, MO- The Miners opened the weekend with a tough loss to the Bulldogs of Truman State, taking the 87-71 loss.
S&T was held to just 12 first quarter points while turning the ball over seven times. Truman's defense led to their explosive offense to open the game as they went 10-18 from the field and got 10 of their 23 points from the Miner turnovers.
Things took a drastic turn in the second quarter; S&T saw a deficit as much as 23 as TSU's offense finished the half shooting just over 59% from the field.
S&T would shoot their way back into the game, going on a 15-0 run midway throughout the second quarter to get within 10 of the Bulldogs.
Truman would get back-to-back three-pointers, but
Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) answered right back with a wide open look from the right wing to put the Miners down 47-34 heading into the half.
The Miners defense would not be able to stop the Bulldogs to open the second half; TSU opened the third quarter on a 14-4 run to push their lead back out to 23. A lay-up from
Ashley Harvey (Raytown, Mo./Raytown) and back-to-back pull-up jumpers from
Tristen McFeders (Kansas City, Mo./Bishop Miege) would get S&T back within 19 of the Bulldogs, but baskets from Tiffany Davenport and Ellie Weltha gave TSU their largest lead of the night of 24.
S&T finally found their rhythm in the fourth quarter of play, but the hole that Truman dug was too deep for the Miners to fight their way back. Their late game spurt started with a short jumper from
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) and a three-pointer from
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) less than two minutes into the quarter.
Baylor, Kabetske, and McFeders all followed suit with baskets of their own before
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) and
Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) hit long-range shots. Rodriguez would get the last bucket of the night with a three-pointer at the buzzer to make it a 87-71 final and hand the Miners their third straight GLVC loss.
Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay),
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township), and
Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) all led the team with 11 points each while Baylor pulled down a team best seven rebounds.
As a team, Missouri S&T (5-6, 1-3 GLVC) shot 40.9% from the field and finished with eight three-pointers.
