Miners Fend Off Hawks to Break Three-Game Losing Skid

QUINCY, ILL- The Miners snapped a three-game losing skid with a 91-76 win over the Hawks of Quincy University. Missouri S&T moves to 6-6 overall and 2-3 in GLVC play after rounding out the four game road-stand.

Missouri S&T opened play on a 19-6 run that was capped off by with back-to-back jumpers from Katey Brown (Craig, Neb./West Point Central Catholic). Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) would add in a lay-up with 43 seconds left in the quarter to give the Miners a 21-11 lead after the opening 10 minutes of play.

S&T opened up shop in the second quarter, shooting just under 53% from the field and extending their lead to as much as 17 before the half was over.

The Miners used a 15-6 run midway through the second stanza that saw S&T's post players combine for 12 points in the four minute span. Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) capped off the first half for the Miners with a 15-foot jumper to give them a 40-27 lead at the break.

After getting up by as much as 22 in the third quarter, the Hawks got four consecutive baskets to cut their deficit down to 14. Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) got the Miners back up by 20 late in the third with a fast break lay-up and an open three-pointer in the far corner. Quincy would close out the quarter with six consecutive points to make it a 64-50 game.

It was a dog fight in the final 10 minutes of the game, both teams combining for 53 points and twenty-three called fouls. Quincy's offense would catch fire in the fourth, getting them within 10 of the Miners.

While the Hawks threatened the Miners lead with intense defensive pressure, S&T kept their heads and fended off Quincy until the final buzzer.

Clutch free-throws from senior guard Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) would ice it for the Miners as she went 13-14 from the charity stripe in the second half to give S&T the 91-76 win.

Today's win is the first time Missouri S&T has scored 90+ points in a GLVC contest and the first time they scored over the amount since the 1999-2000 season when they were still a member of the MIAA.

Four Miner players hit double digit scoring today; Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) tied her career record with a team-best 19 points while going 15-16 from the free-throw line. Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) added 17 points while going 4-5 from three-point range while Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) picked up her 9th double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) added in 10 points while sophomore center Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
