KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – A cold shooting first half, coupled with a hot first half by Truman State, put Missouri S&T's men's basketball team into a deep hole early Thursday night as the Miners lost 86-60 to the Bulldogs in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
For the fourth straight game, the Miners (3-7, 1-3 GLVC) fell into a double-digit hole in the first half.
Dulan Scott (Chicago, IL/Farragut Academy) hit a three-pointer on the Miners' first possession to give S&T the initial lead in the contest, but the Miners did not score again until the 12:33 mark when
Kyle Bushman's (Mount Vernon, MO/Mount Vernon) basket ended a 20-0 Bulldog run.
Truman (7-5, 3-1 GLVC) finished the first half with a 43-24 lead as it shot 64.3 percent in the first half, while the Miners made only 28.6 percent of their attempts over the first 20 minutes of action.
The Miners did shoot better in the second half, hitting 38.2 percent of their tries, but could only get as close as 15 about seven minutes into the half.
CJ Hedgepeth (Evansville, IN/Harrison) was the only Miner to score in double figures as he finished with 10 points, while
Dulan Scott (Chicago, IL/Farragut Academy) ended up with nine and
Jordan Newt (San Francisco, CA/Malibu) with eight. The Miners did connect nine times from three-point range in the contest, but that wasn't enough to overcome the Bulldogs' 57.7 percent shooting performance on the evening.
Hunter Strait led all scorers with 18 points to pace the Bulldogs while Brodric Thomas, the GLVC's second-leading scorer and Cade McKnight had 17 apiece.
The Miners wrap up their stretch of five games away from home Saturday when they face Quincy in a 3:15 p.m. contest in Quincy, Ill.
