Hawks bump off Miners in final game of road swing

QUINCY, Ill. – Missouri S&T got a career-high scoring performance Saturday from CJ Hedgepeth (Evansville, IN/Harrison), but couldn't overcome Quincy's shooting over the first 25-plus minutes of play as the Hawks handed the Miners an 88-81 Great Lakes Valley Conference defeat at Pepsi Arena.

The Miners (3-8, 1-4 GLVC) and Hawks (8-5, 2-3 GLVC) swapped the lead throughout the first half, as the first 20 minutes featured seven ties and nine lead changes.  Quincy used a 8-0 run to take a six-point lead with over 11 minutes to play in the opening half, but S&T answered back with a 10-0 run and took the lead on Mitch Fairless' (St. Charles, MO/Duchesne) lay-up at the 9:41 mark.

Quincy ran off seven straight points off the Miner run to regain the advantage, only to see S&T take the lead back at 30-29 on Dulan Scott's (Chicago, IL/Farragut Academy) fast break lay-up with 5:47 remaining before halftime.

That turned out to be S&T's final lead of the game, as Charles Callier hit a three-pointer on the Hawks' next trip down the floor to put Quincy ahead for good.

The Hawks shot 61.5 percent in the first half as they led 39-34 at the break, then scored the first five points of the second half to take a 10-point lead.  S&T answered back to cut the lead to five, but the Hawks extended their advantage to 14 over the next six minutes.

Trailing by 13 with 12:02 to play, the Miners ran off seven straight points and got to within six on a basket by Fairless with 8:55 remaining.  Moments later, Hedgepeth drained a three-pointer to cut the margin down to four, but over the next four minutes, Quincy was able to get its lead back into double figures.

S&T made one last run and had the lead down to four again with just under a minute to play on Hedgepeth's sixth three-pointer of the game, but the Hawks closed out the win by making their final six free throws.

Hedgepeth scored a career-high 32 points as one of four Miners in double figures in the game.  Scott ended the game with 18 points, while Fairless and Jordan Newt (San Francisco, CA/Malibu) finished with 10 points apiece.  The Miners shot 42 percent for the game and made nine-of-28 from three-point range, but the Hawks made 54.5 percent of their shots from the floor.  Tanner Stuckman led Quincy with 28 points.

The Miners will return home on Thursday to play host to Southwest Baptist in a 7:30 p.m. contest at Gibson Arena.  S&T will play three of its next four games at home beginning with Thursday's game.
