ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's basketball team heads to the southwestern area of the state this weekend to continue its Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule, as the Miners have games slated against Drury and Southwest Baptist in the upcoming days.
This weekend's games are rematches of games played in Rolla just over a week ago, as the Miners dropped games to both teams in a three-day span at Gibson Arena. S&T gets its second crack at Drury Thursday at 7:45 p.m. at the O'Reilly Family Events Center in Springfield, Mo., before its rematch Saturday against SBU at 3 p.m. in Bolivar, Mo.
The Miners come into play this weekend looking to rebound from back-to-back losses late last week to Rockhurst and William Jewell after they had knocked off Maryville at the start of the week. The Miners fell 77-71 Saturday at William Jewell, despite getting a season-high 24 points from
Dulan Scott (Chicago, IL/Farragut Academy).
Scott, who had 22 of his 24 points in the second half, leads S&T in scoring on the season with an average of 15.2 points per game. He is joined in double figures by
CJ Hedgepeth (Evansville, IN/Harrison), who is scoring 13.4 points per contest and leads the team with 49 assists, 29 steals and 42 three-point baskets.
Mitch Fairless (St. Charles, MO/Duchesne), who recorded his third straight game with at least 15 points and is scoring 11.3 per game on the season.
Chima Oduocha (Hoffman Estates, IL/Conant) leads the Miners in rebounding with six per contest, while
Jordan Newt (San Francisco, CA/Malibu) is shooting 41.5 percent from three-point range.
Entering Thursday's game, Missouri S&T has not allowed a point to a non-starter in more than two games, as all of the points scored by Rockhurst and William Jewell came from their starting five. The Miners will put that run, which has extended over 81 minutes of play, up against a team that leads the GLVC in bench production; Drury is averaging a GLVC-best 28.6 points per game from its non-starters.
ABOUT DRURY: The Panthers enter the week looking to snap a three-game losing streak, which began two days after Drury beat the Miners in Rolla on Jan. 18. Drury's three losses all came to teams currently among the top five in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, including a 78-65 loss Saturday at Bellarmine.
Conley Garrison had 20 points in the loss Saturday and comes into Thursday's game as the Panthers' leading scorer on the season with an average of 15.4 points per game. He made five three-pointers in the contest at Bellarmine and has made 49 on the year, which included six in Drury's 86-67 win over S&T at Gibson Arena. Garrison is also Drury's leader in rebounding with 4.6 per game and his 99 assists are the second-most in the GLVC.
Cal Hartley, who has a team-high 53 three-pointers and is shooting a league-best 51 percent from long range, is also in double figures at 12.9 points per game, while Isaac Johnson is scoring just under nine per game and has 40 treys on the year.
ABOUT SOUTHWEST BAPTIST: The Bearcats had their four-game winning streak snapped Saturday when they lost 97-78 at Indianapolis, dropping SBU to 14-4 overall and 7-3 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. Damian Prgomet and Godfrey Rolle had 16 points apiece to lead SBU, who shot 51.9 percent in the game but was hurt by 17 turnoversand 14 three-pointers made by UIndy.
Brady Smith leads a group of four Bearcats in double figures with an average of 15.3 points per game, as he is shooting just over 50 percent from the field and 37.8 percent from three-point range. Prgomet is scoring 12.9 points per contest and leads the Bearcats on the boards with 7.8 per game, while Quinn Nelson is averaging 12.8 points per game.
Nelson is also the Bearcats' top three-point shooter with 52 made at a clip of 46 percent; he hit four in SBU's 75-71 win over the Miners in Rolla earlier this month. Rolle is the fourth double figure scorer with 10.9 points per game and leads SBU with 57 assists, one more than Smith has accumulated.
