Volleyball Downs Arkansas Tech

ROLLA, MO- The Miner volleyball team continued their hot streak during their home tournament with another 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-19) sweep. This time, they took down Arkansas Tech to move to 2-0 for the season.

S&T gained as much as a nine point lead in the opening set; Back-to-back kills from Calla Meyer (Clackamas, Ore./Clackamas) and Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) put the Miners up 18-10 late in the set. Another run of three consecutive kills from Abigail Widiker (Hammond, Wis./Saint Croix Central) and one from Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) pushed their lead to 22-13.

Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood) would end the set with a service ace to give the Miners the 25-18 win.

The Golden Suns opened the second set hot, getting up to a quick 5-1 advantage over the Miners. S&T would make a 7-1 run to regain the lead. Both teams traded points throughout the set until Shelby Ply (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) put down a major kill to end the set at 25-20.

S&T took control late in the third set after battling for the lead with ATU; kills from Ply, Widiker, and Schlader put the Miner up 22-17. The match would come to an end when Calla Meyer (Clackamas, Ore./Clackamas) and Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) blocked Arkansas Tech's Mackenzie Eford to claimed the 25-19 win and their second 3-0 sweep of the tournament.

Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) led the way for the Miners with 12 kills while Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) picked up her first double-double of the season with 11 kills and 17 digs.

Sarah Cavanaugh (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Thunder Ridge) and Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood) shared the assists tonight, collecting 21 and 19, respectively while Corinne Stulce (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) picked up a game-high 20 digs.

The Miners will conclude play in the 2019 Miner Invitational when they play host to Arkansas-Monticello at 11 a.m. and Newman at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow.
