ROLLA, MO- The Miner volleyball team completed their perfect weekend with wins over Arkansas Monticello and Newman to make them 4-0 to begin the season.
In their first game of the day, S&T ended up going to five sets with the Cotton Blossoms of Arkansas-Monticello (25-21, 25-10, 21-25, 23-25, 15-13).
UAM and S&T kept it tight in the opening set; neither team getting more than a handful of points ahead of the other.
Abigail Widiker (Hammond, Wis./Saint Croix Central) ended the set with a kill from
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) to take the 25-21 win.
The Miners took a commanding lead in the second set, going on a 9-1 run to get up 18-5. S&T would cruise to an easy 25-10 win and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Things got interesting in the third set as the Cotton Blossoms made a run at the Miners and found themselves up 17-15 after a service ace from Halli Lambert. Â Multiple S&T errors and a big kill from Leslie Polanco late in the set would send the match into a fourth set after UAM's 25-21 win.
Arkansas-Monticello continued their run into the fourth set as they broke away from the Miners with a 5-0 run to take a 13-8 lead.
After the Miners regained a 22-21 lead after a kill from
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston), the Cotton Blossoms would finish the set on a 4-1 run that was topped off by a kill from Lambert to take the 25-23 win and force a fifth set.
It went down to the wire in the final set of the match, but the Miners were able to pull out the win after
Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) laid one down for the 15-13 win.
The Miners cruised to a smooth win in their final match of the 2019 Miner Invitational, defeating Newman 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-10).
The Jets jumped all over S&T to begin the match, getting up 10-2 early on. The Miners rallied for seven straight points to get within one.
Errors from the Newman side of the court along with kills from
Calla Meyer (Clackamas, Ore./Clackamas) and
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) would add up quick as S&T found themselves up 22-12. Meyer and Schlader would shut the set down with a kill and a service ace, respectively, to take a 25-15 opening set.
It was much the same in the second set for the Miners; kills from
Abigail Widiker (Hammond, Wis./Saint Croix Central),
Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy), and
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) would give S&T a quick 18-9 lead. Errors from Newman would prove costly, as a service error from Kenlee Martin gave the Miners the 25-17 set win.
S&T took complete control in the third set as they eased to a 25-10 win to claim their fourth straight win and finish their home tournament undefeated.
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) had quite the day as she combined for 30 kills and 21 digs between the two matches while
Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) recorded 25 kills and .498 for the day.
The Miners will be back in action next weekend as they travel to Huntsville, AL to take part in the University of Alabama-Huntsville tournament. Match play begins Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.
