ROLLA, MO- With the weather holding up for the first time in almost two weeks, the Miner softball team will finally get back on the field this weekend when they face-off against the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist University on Thursday and Kentucky Wesleyan this Sunday in Owensboro, KY.
S&T hasn't played a game since February 23 where they dropped back-to-back games against Ashland and Grand Valley State in the Lewis Flyers D-2 Dome Invitational. Due to wind gusts reaching up for 60 MPH in the Chicago area, the Miners final game of the weekend against Wayne State was cancelled.
Mother Nature had other plans for the team last weekend; the Miners were schedule for play in the TMZ Tournament down in Joplin, Mo, but wet and cold weather forced the Miners to cancel their weekend series in southwest Missouri and to postpone their doubleheader series with Southwest Baptist, for a second time this season, to this Thursday.
The Miners are currently led by
Courtney Jackson's (Parkville, MO/Park Hill South) .356 batting average and team leading 16 hits. She, along with
Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley),
Olivia Young (Millstadt, IL/Belleville Township),
Jacey Allen (Roanoke, TX/Byron Nelson),
Anna Burke (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville), and
Gretchen Egly (Joliet, IL/Plainfield Central) are all batting above the .300 mark.
Allen and
Olivia Walter (Catawissa, MO/Cor Jesu Academy) are the only ones who have hit a long-ball this season. Allen hit the first S&T homerun of the season in the team's season opener against Northeastern State. Walter would pick up her first career homerun in a Miner uniform later that same weekend with a 2-run shot against Christian Brothers in the Ronnie Hawkins Tournament.
In the circle, Walter and
Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) have been the go-to's for S&T. Walter has a team low 3.73 ERA with a 2-3 record to go with it. Baxter is currently posting a 5.88 ERA with a 1-6 record while
Avery English (Carterville, IL/Carterville) saw her first action of the season two weekends ago when she came in for relief for 2.2 innings.
This is not the first time the Miners have crossed paths with Southwest Baptist and Kentucky Wesleyan. The Miners lead the all-time series 37-33 against SBU. They recorded a 4-2 win over the Bearcats in the beginning of the season. This was their first win over SBU since the 2016 season. S&T also leads the all-time series against the Panthers of Kentucky Wesleyan 12-10 with the last win coming in 2012 when the Miners split a double-header with KWC in Owensboro.
