Miners Head to KC for GLVC Doubleheaders

ROLLA, MO- After opening GLVC play with a doubleheader split with Drury University, Missouri S&T (6-14, 1-1 GLVC) will once again hit the road as they head up to Kansas City to take on William Jewell College and Rockhurst University this Friday and Saturday.

After Avery English (Carterville, IL/Carterville) pitched a near perfect game for the Miners in game one of the doubleheader, S&T faced trouble as the Panthers found their rhythm in game two.

Drury answered Missouri S&T's game one win with a 6-run second inning to open game two. They're commanding lead would be enough to hold the Miners, despite Gretchen Egly's (Joliet, IL/Plainfield Central) 2-run homerun in the bottom of the 6th inning to make it an 8-2 game. DU would hold the Miners and take the second game for the series split.

Courtney Jackson (Parkville, MO/Park Hill South), Olivia Young (Millstadt, IL/Belleville Township), and Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) lead the team offensively; all of them batting over .300 with Jackson leading the pack with a .357 average and a team leading 26 hits. Collectively, the team is hitting .255 for the season and is 5th in the GLVC with a 0.964 fielding percentage.

In the circle, Avery English (Carterville, IL/Carterville) continues to make a name for herself as she leads the league with a 1.31 ERA while holding a 3-1 record. In her 26.2 innings of work, she has given up 23 hits while walking just seven batters and recording 15 strikeouts. Olivia Walter (Catawissa, MO/Cor Jesu Academy) getting into the swing of things as she goes into the weekend series with a 2-6 record and a 4.29 ERA while leading the team with 32 strikeouts.

Both Rockhurst and William Jewell lead the all-time series over the Miners with the Hawks winning 19 of the last 32 match-ups and the Cardinals going 21-7 over S&T.

Last season, the Miners took a series split with Rockhurst; after dropping game one in the 8th inning, the Miners recouped and took a 1-0 win over RU after Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) popped a ball up in the infield that dropped and allowed Ashley Davis (Erie, IL/Erie) to score. It would be all they would need to secure the win as pitcher Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) went the distance allowing just five hits and striking out three batters.

It was a different story against William Jewell; despite a solo homerun by Ashley Davis (Erie, IL/Erie) to tie the game up in the bottom of the second of game one, William Jewell answered with a 2-run shot to center field that would give them the 4-2 win. That win carried over in the second game as the Cardinals drove in 12 runs in five innings to take the 12-2 win.

Rockhurst (14-9, 3-1 GLVC) is led by Emily Truitt's team-leading .438 batting average. She adds in two homeruns and 22 RBIs for a team best .725 slugging percentage. Along with Truitt, five other Hawks players are batting over .300.

In the circle for RU, Shannon Greene has been the go-to for the Hawks as she posts a 2.79 ERA with an 11-4 record. In her 103.0 innings, she has accumulated 52 strikeouts while walking just 23 opponents.

William Jewell's (7-7, 2-2 GLVC) offensive efforts have been led by Courtney Beatty's .465 batting average and her team leading 20 hits. Beatty is backed up by Sarah Lewis and Emily Hoover's .310 and .300 averages, respectively.

Pitching wise, Madelynne Greenstreet and Anna Biondo have been the leading the Cardinals; Greenstreet holds a 3.25 ERA with a 4-2 record while her counterpart owns a 4.40 ERA with a 3-4 record.
