Miners continue homestand by hosting UMSL and Maryville

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's basketball team heads into the second week of its three-week homestand as it hosts the Great Lakes Valley Conference's two St. Louis County institutions at Gibson Arena.

The week begins for the Miners Thursday when they take on Missouri-St. Louis in a 7:30 p.m. contest, then Maryville comes to Rolla Saturday afternoon for a 3 p.m. game.  At Thursday's game, the Miner football team will be honored during halftime for its season that included a victory in the Mineral Water Bowl.

S&T comes into the week looking to snap a five-game losing streak, as narrow losses to Truman State and Quincy dropped it to 3-16 overall and 1-10 in the GLVC.  The Miners got 24 points from Dulan Scott (Chicago, IL/Farragut Academy) – which matched his career high – in Saturday's game and he enters the game as one of three S&T players in double figures in the scoring column.

Scott is averaging 10.7 points per game and has averaged 20 per game during the first two games of the S&T homestand, while CJ Hedgepeth (Evansville, IN/Harrison) is scoring 12.6 per game to lead the active players in that department.  Jordan Newt (San Francisco, CA/Malibu) owns the highest average at 14.3 per game, but he has been sidelined with an injury.

Hedgepeth also leads the Miners with 57 assists on the year, while Juwan Miller (Kitchener, Ont./Huron Heights) has 54 assists and leads S&T in rebounding with 4.9 per contest.  Hedgepeth has 30 steals as well – his average of 1.7 per game ranks second in the GLVC – while Miller is sixth in the league in steals with 1.5 per game.

ABOUT MISSOURI-ST. LOUIS: The Tritons come into this week's action on the heels of a big comeback win Saturday over William Jewell, as they overcame a 16-point deficit with 4:25 to play to pull out an 86-84 win.  UMSL took the lead for good with seven seconds remaining in on a put-back by Jalen Wilkins-McCoy as it improved to 17-4 overall and 8-3 in the GLVC.  The Tritons have received votes in the national poll in each of the last three weeks.

The Tritons have reached the 17-win mark for the first time since the 2014-15 season on the strength of a defensive unit that has allowed the third-fewest points on average in the conference at 69.6 per game.  Opposing teams have made just 43.8 percent of their shots against the Tritons, who have also outrebounded their foes by over six boards per contest.

Johnathan Matthews leads UMSL with an average of 14.8 points per game and has done a good deal of his offensive work from beyond the three-point line, where he has connected 52 times at a rate of 43 percent.  Eric Dust is also scoring in double figures at 10.8 points per game and is the Tritons' top rebounder with 5.3 a game, while Ronnie Carson is averaging 10.3 points per game and is the team's assist leader with 55.

ABOUT MARYVILLE: The Saints, who play at Drury Thursday, enter the week as the GLVC's top three-point shooting team at 40.2 percent, led by the duo of Chaz Glotta and Casey Teson -- the top two scorers on the Maryville roster.  Glotta has made a team-high 53 three-point baskets and is shooting 38.7 percent on the year as he is scoring 11.3 points per game, second to the 20.9 points per game posted by Teson.

Teson is shooting 42.9 percent from beyond the arc and has made 42 treys on the year; he is currently the second-leading scorer in the GLVC and one of four players in the league averaging at least 20 points per game.  Teson  -- who also leads Maryville with 56 assists -- and Glotta are the only two Saints in double figures, as Zach Colletta is averaging 9.9 points a game and Robin Thompson is at 9.6 per game.   Jerome Davis is the Saints' top rebounder with 5.8 per game and also leads the team with 21 blocked shots.

While the Saints are leading the GLVC in three-point shooting, they also lead the league in three-point defense with a mark of 32.7 percent and are third in the conference in field goal percentage with a mark of 48.5 percent.  However, Maryville is 1-7 this season in games decided by five or fewer points, with the win coming last week against William Jewell before a 70-67 loss Saturday to Rockhurst that sent Maryville to 8-12 and 3-8 in the GLVC.
