Softball Drops Opening Games of Lewis Dome Invitational

ROSEMONT, ILL- The Miners took a hard hit in the opening night of the Lewis Flyers' Dome Invitational. S&T dropped their first two games of the weekend against Findlay and Purdue Northwest by the final scores of 5-4 and 4-0.

 GAME ONE: FINDLAY-5, MISSOURI S&T-4
The University of Findlay used a three-run top of the 1st inning to jump ahead of the Miners in game one. Dylan Wiley got things going when she singled up the middle and sent Allison Brun home. The Oilers would get back-to-back hits from Rebecca Harv and Salwa Al-Haj to take a quick 3-0 lead.

S&T got one of those runs back in the bottom half of the inning when Gretchen Egly (Joliet, IL/Plainfield Central) double to deep right-center and sent Olivia Young (Millstadt, IL/Belleville Township) home from first base.

Findlay would tact on another two more runs; one in the top of the second on a passed ball and another in the fourth on a throwing error made by the Miners.

Down 5-1 heading into the bottom of the 7th inning, the Miners began their rally.

Courtney Jackson (Parkville, MO/Park Hill South) kicked things off with a single to third base. Anna Klein piggy-backed off Jackson's hit with a single up the middle, which led to Olivia Young (Millstadt, IL/Belleville Township) picking up an RBI single to make it a 5-2 game.

Egly drove in another run for the Miners on a sac-fly out to left-center to cut S&T deficit to 5-3. Jacey Allen (Roanoke, TX/Byron Nelson), the very next batter, blasted a single to right field that would score Olivia Young (Millstadt, IL/Belleville Township) and make it 5-4. Unfortunately, the Miners would not be able to extend their rally as Findlay pitcher, Hailey Bryan, struck out the final batter and took the 5-4 win.

Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) led the charge for the Miners offensively with two hits while Jackson, Young, Egly, Allen, Walter, Hamann, and Burke all added in one hit a piece.

Olivia Walter (Catawissa, MO/Cor Jesu Academy) (2-2) got the start for game one in the circle pitching a complete game with seven strikeouts.

GAME TWO: MISSOURI S&T-0, PURDUE NORTHWEST-4
Despite the final score, the Miners had many opportunities to put runs on the board; they stranded eight runners, five of which were in scoring position.

Purdue Northwest put up two runs in the bottom of the 2nd on two RBI singles from Ashley Bravo and Jessie Beadle.

PNW added two more runs in the bottom of the 5th on a hit from Zoee Anderson and an error committed by S&T.

The Miners attempted a comeback in the top of the 6th inning; with runners at the corners, Carley Hamann (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln Way North) reached base on a fielder's choice that loaded the bases. Purdue Northwest turned two fielder's choice plays that kept the Miners scoreless.

Courtney Jackson (Parkville, MO/Park Hill South) led the way in game two with two hits while Klein, Young, Egly, and Keely Morgan (Laguna Hills, CA/Laguna Hills) all recorded one hit each.

Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) (1-5) got the start in game two going 5.0 innings with two strikeouts and five hits. Avery English (Carterville, IL/Carterville) pitched her first inning of the season finishing out the last inning of the game with one hit.
