ROLLA, MO- After having a full week off of games due to inclement weather, the Miner softball team will hit the diamond this weekend with five games lined up in three days at the Music City Invitational in Hendersonville, Tenn.
The Miners opened up the 2019 season 2-3 at their first tournament at the beginning of the month in Arkadelphia, Ark.
Jacey Allen (Roanoke, TX/Byron Nelson) and
Olivia Walter (Catawissa, MO/Cor Jesu Academy) had the big bats for S&T; Allen hit two homeruns over the three-day span while Walter picked up her first collegiate homerun in the team's win over Christian Brothers.
Gretchen Egly (Joliet, IL/Plainfield Central) and
Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) currently lead the Miners with their .400 and .375 batting averages and combined for 12 hits in the team's first five games.
Olivia Walter (Catawissa, MO/Cor Jesu Academy),
Olivia Young (Millstadt, IL/Belleville Township),
Courtney Jackson (Parkville, MO/Park Hill South), and
Jacey Allen (Roanoke, TX/Byron Nelson) all ended the weekend hitting above .300 while combining for 30 of the team's 36 hits.
Olivia Walter (Catawissa, MO/Cor Jesu Academy) and
Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) split the starts in the circle for the Miners and faced tough challenges; Walter came out of the weekend 1-1 with a 5.06 ERA and three strikeouts while Baxter looked at a 5.25 ERA with a 1-2 start to the season.
The Miners will face Tiffin (0-0), Davenport (0-0), Trevecca Nazarene (2-2), Ursuline (1-3), and Kentucky Wesleyan (2-4) this weekend. This will be the first time S&T has played these teams with the exception of Kentucky Wesleyan; the Miners lead the all-time series against the Panthers 12-10, but have not seen a win against KWC since the 2012 season when S&T split a doubleheader with them.
Host school Trevecca Nazarene opened their 2019 season with a split at the University of Alabama-Huntsville Charger Chillout this past weekend. Before defeating Missouri-St. Louis and Delta State on Saturday, they took two losses to (13) Young Harris College and Henderson State University.
Ursuline College spent their opening weekend in Florida where they dropped a doubleheader to University at Tampa and drawing a split with Florida Southern College last Monday night. The Arrows are currently led by Brooklyn Miller with her .417 batting average and five hits.
Kentucky Wesleyan also took part in the UAH Charger Chillout for their opening weekend and came out 2-4. Their two wins came from an 11-run inning in their 14-2 win over Miles College and a 5-1 W over the Buccaneers of Christian Brothers. The Panthers are currently led by Jaylin Tidwell's .500 batting average after she went 10-20 with six RBIs and 15 total bases.
