ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T men's basketball coach
Bill Walker has announced the signing of two players to National Letters of Intent to play at the university in the 2020-21 season.
The new additions for the Miners are Micah Johnson, a 6-8 forward from Ankeny, Iowa and Kaden Froebe, a 6-2 guard from Lincoln, Ill. Johnson played at Centennial High School in Ankeny, while Froebe played at Lincoln Community High School.
"Kaden and Micah are a big reason why the future is bright," Walker said. "They both have been extremely well-coached in high school and will be very prepared to make the transition to college basketball.
"Kaden can play either guard spot and can both score for himself and create opportunities for his teammates. At 6-8, Micah has the versatility to play anywhere on the court. They are both great additions to our program both on and off the floor."
Johnson averaged 10.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game during the 2018-19 campaign, while shooting 53.7 percent from the field and 63.3 percent at the free throw line. He also added 23 assists and blocked 22 shots on the season as he earned second-team all-conference honors in the CIML Central Conference.
As a sophomore in the 2017-18 season, Johnson averaged 7.7 points and 4.6 rebounds in 23 games with 22 blocked shots as well during that campaign to earn honorable mention all-league honors. Ankeny Centennial has been one of the top programs in the state of Iowa.
"Coach Walker and Missouri S&T are getting a well-rounded individual in Micah Johnson," said Ankeny Centennial coach Bob Fontana. "Micah is very coachable, has a great work ethic and has high expectations for himself. He has the ability to score at the rim and off the bounce.
"He is a great teammate who strives to do what's best for his team," Fontana added. "He is a true picture of a student-athlete. He will be a great addition to the Miner program."
Froebe played at both guard positions at the high school level – primarily as a point guard – yet averaged 21 points per game during his junior year as he was selected to the All-Apollo Conference first team. He earned second-team all-state and all-area laurels as well as first-team all-region and all-county awards following the 2018-19 season, when he helped lead his team to a second place regional finish.
During the 2018-19 season, Froebe shot 43 percent from the field and 83 percent at the free throw line for a Lincoln program that has been traditionally one of the top ones in the state of Illinois under the direction of Neil Alexander, who has won 832 wins at the high school level.
"Kaden is a very competitive person. The competitor you see on game night is the same guy I see every day in practice," said Alexander. "He is a very good player now but when he fills out, as I know he will, he will really be something else."
