S&T falls in heartbreaker in overtime at Missouri Western

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – After a trio of dramatic shots at the end of regulation time forced an extra five minutes, Missouri Western's Tyrell Carroll answered a clutch three-pointer by Missouri S&T's CJ Hedgepeth (Evansville, IN/Harrison) with a basket with 1.9 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Griffons a 66-64 win over the Miners Sunday afternoon.

The tight battle in the second half got extended to overtime after three baskets in the final 21 seconds kept the game tied.  Hedgepeth rebounded a missed shot by Tyus Milhillon and went coast-to-coast for a game-tying layup with 21 seconds remaining in the second half, only to see Carroll knock down a three-pointer with 2.9 seconds to go to put the Griffons back into the lead.

On the ensuing inbounds play, Nathan Elmer (Nixa, MO/Nixa) got the ball to Mitch Fairless (St. Charles, MO/Duchesne) near the mid-court circle and after taking two dribbles, drained a long three-point shot as the buzzer sounded to tie it up again at 58.

Both teams struggled to score early in the overtime period, as Western scored its first six points in the session from the free throw line.  However, after a missed shot by Beau Baker with 29 seconds left allowed S&T to get the ball back, the Miners got the ball ahead to Hedgepeth and he knocked down trey from the wing to even things up again.

Carroll got the ball in his hands again and hit a runner in the lane over a pair of S&T defenders with 1.9 seconds on the clock to give Western a two-point lead.  With one more opportunity, Hedgepeth had a shot from midcourt hit the front of the rim as time expired.

The Miners (0-2) got off to a slow start offensively, hitting just 39 percent of their first half shots and falling behind by as many as 10 points, despite holding the Griffons (2-3) to 33.3 percent shooting over the first 20 minutes.  Western led 29-24 at the half and held onto that advantage until S&T got baskets on consecutive possessions from Elmer and Fairless to tie the contest with just over five minutes were played in the second half.

After the teams swapped baskets, the Miners took their their first lead of the game at 35-33 when Hedgepeth knocked down a jumper in the lane and would eventually extend that lead to four.  Western came back and regained the lead on Jonathan Mesmacque's three-pointer with 8:07 remaining.

The Griffons held a six-point advantage with 3:37 to go in the second half, but the Miners outscored Western 11-5 down the stretch to force the game into overtime.

Fairless led the Miners with 15 points to match his career high, while Chima Oduocha (Hoffman Estates, IL/Conant) recorded his first double-double as a Miner with 12 points and 10 rebounds.  S&T finished the contest with a 38.4 percent mark from the field, but made only four-of-14 from three-point range and was outrebounded 41-35.

Carroll scored a game-high 27 points as the Griffons made only 38.5 percent mark from the floor themselves and were held to six-of-26 from three-point land by the Miners.   S&T forced Missouri Western into 23 turnovers in the game as well.

Missouri S&T returns to Gibson Arena Tuesday night to host Lindenwood-Belleville at 7:30 p.m.
