Miners lead wire-to-wire to capture first victory of season

ROLLA, Mo. – A balanced offensive attack led to the first victory of the 2019-20 season for Missouri S&T's men's basketball team Tuesday night, as the Miners had four players score in double figures in a 77-59 victory over Lindenwood-Belleville at Gibson Arena.

The Miners (1-2) led from start to finish, jumping out to an double-figure lead by the time the game reached the midway point of the first half.  S&T shot just 33.3 percent from the field in the first half, but was able to keep that lead in double digits for much of the final 10 minutes of the half at the free throw line, where they made 12-of-18 during the half.

S&T led by 11 at the intermission, then broke the game open early in the second half when CJ Hedgepeth (Evansville, IN/Harrison) came to life offensively.  Held to four points in the opening period, Hedgepeth hit three consecutive three-pointers to help turn a 10-point lead into a 17-point advantage before five minutes had elapsed in the second half.

Hedgepeth scored 14 of his game-high 18 points in the final 20 minutes, as the Miners shot 42.5 percent and hit six three-pointers in the half.

Mitch Fairless (St. Charles, MO/Duchesne) also had his second straight game in double figures with 13 points, while Dulan Scott (Chicago, IL/Farragut Academy) scored in his first action of the season and Nathan Elmer (Nixa, MO/Nixa) added a career-high 11 as he connected three times from beyond the arc.

The Miners outrebounded the Lynx 48-35 – Chima Odoucha had 11 rebounds to lead S&T – and forced 25 turnovers while holding them to 38.6 percent shooting from the field.  Reagan Snider led Lindenwood-Belleville with 17 points.

Missouri S&T will step outside of regular season play for a night on Friday when it takes on Southeast Missouri State in an exhibition game in Cape Girardeau, Mo.  Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m.
