ROLLA, MO- The Miners faced a tough loss tonight, falling in five set to the Tritons of Missouri-St. Louis (21-25, 25-19, 25-21, 11-15).
After dropping the first set, the Miners came back on fire, hitting .323 and .242 in the second and third sets and holding UMSL to just a .155 hitting average and committing 13 errors in the process.
S&T pulled away from the Tritons in the second set and found themselves with a 15-8 lead after a kill from
Caroline Dykes (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence). UMSL would fight their way back to a one point game, but the Missouri-St. Louis errors along with a kill from
Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) and a big block from O'Boyle and
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) put the Miners two points away from tying the match.
The Miners did just that with back-to-back kills from
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) to take the 25-19 set two win.
UMSL took an early lead in the third set, getting up 7-2 after consecutive kills from Selena Nolte and Amanda Vollmer.
Facing a 12-6 deficit, S&T's offense got the boost it needed with a six point run. With two service aces from
Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State), the Miners also got a monster block from
Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) and
Avery Reed (Ste. Genevieve, Mo./Ste. Genevieve) along with kills from them to tie the set at 12-12.
Both teams would trade points until the Miners, once again, went on an offensive run that started with another service ace from
Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State). The 23-19 lead would be enough to push S&T ahead of the Tritons for the 25-21 set three win and the 2-1 match lead.
Set four would go down to the wire; looking at a 23-20 lead, UMSL would rally back for six points and hold the Miners to just one kill from
Avery Reed (Ste. Genevieve, Mo./Ste. Genevieve) in the. The 26-24 set four loss would tie the match at 2-2 and force a fifth and final set.
S&T found themselves down 9-5 early in the set, but the lead would be enough for the Tritons to take the 15-11 win and the match.
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) led the way for the Miners picking up her 16
th double-double of the season with 16 kills and 19 digs while
Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) and
Avery Reed (Ste. Genevieve, Mo./Ste. Genevieve) added in 12 kills each. Corinne Stucle led the team with 20 digs while
Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood) handed out 47 assists.
