ROLLA, MO- The Miners picked up their first win of the season with an easy 113-46 win over the Blue Jays of Westminster College (Mo.).
Both teams traded baskets to open the first quarter, tying the score four different times.
S&T would retake the lead one last time at the end of the quarter when
Katey Brown (Craig, Neb./West Point Central Catholic) and
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) went for back-to-back three-pointers to take the 28-24 lead.
The Miners opened up shop in the second quarter, holding the Blue Jays to just eight points and forcing ten turnovers. S&T extended their lead out to 20 with 49 seconds remaining in the half when Laura Rodruguez sank two free-throws to make it a 50-30 game.
It was all S&T from there, hold Westminster to just 14 points in the second half of the game and combining for 63 points over the course of 20 minutes.
The Miners hit the century mark with 4:54 remaining in the game when
Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) found an open
Ashley Harvey (Raytown, Mo./Raytown) at the wing for a wide open 15-foot jump shot. Their largest lead of the night came on the last shot of the contest when Rodriguez found
Katey Brown (Craig, Neb./West Point Central Catholic) posted up in the paint for an easy turn-around jumper.
With the win, the team surpassed the previous record of 109 points scored set back in 1990. Ten Miner players scored while six scored in double-digits;
Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) led all players with 26 points and nine assists while
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) (15),
Kristin Keys (St. Louis, MO/Westminster CHristian Academy) (14),
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) (12),
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) (12), and
Ashley Harvey (Raytown, Mo./Raytown) (10) rounded out the remaining five.
Along with a new record of points scored in a game, the Miners also tied the program record for points scored in a half (63 in the third and fourth quarters tonight), three-point field goals made (14), and set a new record with 35 assists dished out in the game, surpassing the previous record by four.
As a team, S&T shot a hot 57% from the field and 45% from long range.
