ST. LOUIS, MO- The Miners picked up an important win tonight as they broke their three game losing skid with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-23) win over the Saints of Maryville University.
S&T and MU kicked off the first set trading points and the lead. It wasn't until late in the set that the Miners were able to pull away from the Saints; a kill from
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) and a block from
Calla Meyer (Clackamas, Ore./Clackamas) and
Abigail Widiker (Hammond, Wis./Saint Croix Central) put S&T up 21-17. A kill from Widiker would start a 4-1 run that would end the set with S&T taking the 25-19 win.
The Miners jumped all over the Saints in the second set, holding them to just eight kills and a 0.00 hitting percentage.
After a block from MU's Avery Bell and Faith Ahlhardt made it a 17-13 game, S&T ended the set quickly with an 8-1 run to take the 25-14 set two win and put the Miners up 2-0 in the match.
Twenty set three kills from S&T helped them to capture the 25-23 set win.
It was much the same in the third set as in the first set; both teams unable to extend their lead more than a handful of points. S&T pulled away late in the set after kills from
Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) and
Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) put them up 22-19. But, Maryville answered with four straight points to regain the lead.
S&T would get two big kills from
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) to end the set and give the Miners the 3-0 match win.
Schlader led the way for the Miners with 13 kills while
Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) and
Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) recorded 12 and 10, respectively. Corinne Stucle led all players with 14 digs while
Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood) dished out a match best 40 assists.
The Miners (12-5; 2-3 GLVC) will continue play this weekend when they host the Hawks of Quincy on Thursday night and the Bulldogs of Truman State on Saturday afternoon.
