ROLLA, MO- The Miners pulled off a great win over the Hawks of Quincy University with 26-24, 25-23, 16-25, 25-19 scores for the 3-1 win.
S&T struggled to pull away from QU in the first set, never gaining more than a five point lead.
The Miners finally extended their lead out after back-to-back kills from
Abigail Widiker (Hammond, Wis./Saint Croix Central) and an ace from
Avery Reed (Ste. Genevieve, Mo./Ste. Genevieve) gave them a 24-19 lead. After Quincy rallied back for five straight points, the Miners put it away with a kill from
Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) to take the 26-24 win.
It was much the same in the second set, back and forth scoring from both teams and keeping the game close. S&T would get three straight kills from
Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) to secure the 25-23 set two win and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
After dropping the third set, the Miners came out swinging, putting down 19 kills and holding the Hawks to just a 0.114 hitting percentage in the final set.
S&T saw their largest lead of the night after two kills from
Abigail Widiker (Hammond, Wis./Saint Croix Central) put the Miners up 18-10 late in the fourth set. Quincy would rally back and threaten the Miners, but big kill from Widiker and
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) sealed the deal and gave S&T the 25-19 win and the match.
Four Miners hitters got to double-digits tonight;
Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) led all players with 18 kills while
Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) (14),
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) (13), and
Abigail Widiker (Hammond, Wis./Saint Croix Central) (11) added in 38 combined kills. Corinne Stucle picked up a match-best 27 digs while
Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood) handed out a career best 53 assists.
S&T (13-5; 3-3 GLVC) will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when they host the Bulldogs of Truman State.
