ROLLA, MO- Missouri S&T suffered their second straight GLVC loss tonight as they fell to the Prairie Stars of Illinois Springfield 3-1 (25-21, 20-25, 23-25, 24-26).
The Miners fought to stay in game in set one, going on spurts throughout the set to stay within reaching distance of the Prairie Stars.
Down 17-14 late in the set, S&T went on a 5-0 run, that was capped by back-to-back kills from
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston), to take an 18-17 lead. They would finish the set with a 7-3 rally to claim the set one, 25-21, win.
UIS took control in the second set, hitting 0.333 and taking advantage of the six Miner errors.
Being down 17-15, Illinois Springfield recorded five straight points to take a 21-15 lead. Two S&T errors and two kills from UIS gave them the 25-20 set two win and tied the match at 1-1.
S&T grinded it out in the third set, never getting more than three points behind the Prairie Stars.
After a kill from
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) and two UIS errors, the Miners found themselves down one late in the set. But, the Prairie Stars could not be stopped as they got a kill from Megan Krasowki and a block from Alli Splitt to claim the set three win and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
It was a battle in set four, going for extra points (26-24) to claim a winner.
Illinois Springfield opened the set with a 5-1 run and seemed to take control of the pace of the set early-on.
But, S&T would make some big-time plays to get themselves right back in it;
Abigail Widiker (Hammond, Wis./Saint Croix Central) came in clutch with three kills while
Calla Meyer (Clackamas, Ore./Clackamas) and
Shelby Ply (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) put down a much needed block to give them a 9-5 lead.
Both teams traded points throughout the set, neither team able to pull away from the other.
It wouldn't be until the last two points of the match that Illinois Springfield took the win after a kill from Alli Splitt and a block from Splitt and Becca Blakeley gave them the 26-24 win and the 3-1 match win.
The Miners (11-4; 1-2 GLVC) were led by
Emilee Schlader's (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) double-double with 26 kills and 16 digs.
Abigail Widiker (Hammond, Wis./Saint Croix Central) picked up a double-double for herself with 15 kills and 11 digs while
Shelby Ply (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) had a career high five blocks tonight.
Corinne Stucle led the way for S&T with 24 digs while
Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood) dished out 41 assists while also picking up 11 digs in the match.
S&T will be back in action tomorrow when they face-off with 6
th ranked Lewis University. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
