Miners Drop GLVC Match to 6th Ranked Lewis

ROLLA, MO- Looking to record a win after back-to-back losses, the Miners hosted the 6th ranked Flyers of Lewis University. Despite having 33 kills in the match, Lewis went on to take the 3-0 match (17-25, 23-25, 23-25).

LU and S&T traded points to open the first set, neither team able to claim true lead. It wasn't until the late in the set when the Flyers broke away from the Miners. Five combined kills from Mikah Freppon, Alexandra Preuss, and Colleen Wilhelm and an error from S&T pushed Lewis' lead out to 23-16. Two more Miner errors would give the Flyers the 25-17 set win and go up 1-0 in the match.

S&T faced a quick 15-9 deficit to open set two. The Miners fought their way back into the match behind kills from Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) and Sophie Straatmann (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) to make it an 18-17 game.

The Miners and Flyers fought back and forth with points until the end of the set. Two kills from Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) and a service ace from Schlader pushed the score to 24-23 in favor of Lewis. One final kill from Alexandra Preuss gave LU the 25-23 win and took a 2-0 match lead.

Both teams struggled to break away from the other in the third set, getting four lead changes and eight tie scores. It would come down to the wire to decide a winner of the set.

S&T took a 23-22 lead after another kill from Schlader. Lewis would rally for three straight points to claim the set three win and the 3-0 match win.

The Miners were led behind Emilee Schlader's (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) 12th double-double of the season with 12 kills and 16 assists. Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) was right behind her with eight while Abigail Widiker (Hammond, Wis./Saint Croix Central) recorded five.

Widiker and Corinne Stulce (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) both recorded double-digits in digs with 10 and 12, respectively while Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood) handed out a team-best 23 assists.
