LIBERTY, MO- The Miners got back on track today with a 3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-21) sweep over the Cardinals of William Jewell College.
S&T jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the opening set after four Cardinal errors and a kill from
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston). WJC would climb their way back and make it a 5-4 game.
The Miners would extend their lead out to as much as 19-12 following a kill from
Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State). William Jewell would fight to stay in the game, but a service ace and another kill from Schlader would end the set and give S&T the 25-21 set one win.
William Jewell opened set two on a high note, putting the Miners down 11-5 early.
S&T would get back into the game on a big run from the Miners front row; Gannaway put down two kills and blocked two balls with
Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) while O'Boyle and
Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood) blocked WJC's Paityn Hardison to put the Miners down 12-13.
Another late run in the set gave S&T the lead again after another Miner block from
Calla Meyer (Clackamas, Ore./Clackamas) and
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston). After back and forth scoring, S&T came out on top with the 27-25 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Cardinals and Miners kept things interesting in the third set, neither team getting more than three point ahead of the other.
S&T ended the match after back-to-back kills from Schlader and
Abigail Widiker (Hammond, Wis./Saint Croix Central). The 25-21 final gave the Miners the 3-0 match win and their fifth GLVC win of the season.
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) and
Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) led the way for the Miners with 18 and 13 kills, respectively, while Gannaway and
Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) both had four blocks each.
Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood) led all players with 40 assists while Corinne Stucle picked up a team high 17 digs.
