INDIANAPOLIS, IND- The Miners started off on a good foot on the opening day of the Midwest Regional by taking down the Lakers of Grand Valley State 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 25-23).
Grand Valley State opened up set one with a 7-3 lead after a block from Emma Clines and Jaeli Primus. S&T would rally back and tie the set after back-to-back kills from
Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) and
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston).
The Miners and Lakers would trade points before S&T pulled away with a 15-11 lead and would never give it up. O'Boyle would end the set at 25-21 with consecutive kills.
After dropping the second set, 21-25, the Miners came back firing, pushing their lead out to 20-17 in the third set with the help of two Laker errors.
Consecutive kills from
Avery Reed (Ste. Genevieve, Mo./Ste. Genevieve) and
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) would give S&T the 25-22 set two win.
It would come down to the wire in the fourth set, neither team being able to extend their lead over the other.
S&T found themselves up 23-20 late in the set. Errors from the Miners side would put GVSU back in the game at 23-23. Schlader ended the match, quickly, with a kill and a service ace to give the Miners the 3-1 win.
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) led all players with 16 kills and added 11 digs while
Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) added in 11 kills and five blocks.
Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood) dished out 38 assists while
Corinne Stulce (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) picked up 14 digs.
