INDIANAPOLIS, IND.-The Miner volleyball team completed their sweep at the Midwest Regional with 3-1 wins over Findlay (25-11, 25-14, 21-25, 27-25) and Walsh (25-22, 21-25, 25-23, 25-15).
S&T vs. Findlay:
The Miners opened up day two of the tournament with consecutive set win over the Oilers, holding UF to just 25 points through two sets. S&T's 12 service aces and .400+ hitting percentage gave them a quick 2-0 lead in the match.
Findlay came back hot in the third set, trading points with the Miners.
After a UF error put S&T down 20-21, the Oilers would get kills from Rylie Pattinson and Shelby Kin and a block from Emily Annesser and Natalie Maras to give them a 24-20 lead. Another block from Maras and Kin ended the set at 25-21 and made it a 2-1 game.
It wasn't until late in the fourth set when S&T finally pulled away from Findlay, going on a 6-1 run that was topped off with consecutive kills from
Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) and
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston).
Findlay would rally late in the set for five points to take a 21-19 lead. While the Miners were able to regain the lead, UF didn't go down easily. Back-to-back kills from Schlader would end the set at 27-25 and give the Miners the 3-1 match win.
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston), who put down her 1000
th career kill in the match, led all players with 23 kills while
Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) and
Abigail Widiker (Hammond, Wis./Saint Croix Central) both chipped in 10 kills each.
Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood) dished out a match best 48 assists while
Corinne Stulce (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) picked up a team high 13 digs.
S&T vs. Walsh:
It was a battle for the entire match against the Cavaliers, both teams recording over 40 kills in the four set match.
The Miners opened up shop in the first set, gaining a quick 15-4 lead after blocks from
Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) and
Avery Reed (Ste. Genevieve, Mo./Ste. Genevieve).
Walsh would climb their way back from the deficit to make it a 23-21 game. After a Cavs error and a kill from
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston), S&T would take the 25-22 set one win.
After Walsh came back and took set two, S&T went to work, holding the Cavs to a 0.098 hitting average and putting down 26 kills in the process.
Down 22-23 late in the third, the Miners caught a break with a Walsh error and a big kill from
Caroline Dykes (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence) to go up 24-23. Dykes and Schlader would end the set with a huge block and go up 2-1 in the match.
S&T put it away easily in the fourth set, gaining a 19-10 lead after back-to-back kills from Dykes and Schlader. The Miners would get five straight points to end the match, including a service ace from
Corinne Stulce (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) that gave S&T the 25-15 win.
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) led all players with 26 kills while
Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood), who recorded her 2000
th career assists during the match, led all players with 52 assists.
Missouri S&T (17-5; 4-3 GLVC) will continue conference play next weekend when they travel to Kansas City to take on Rockhurst on Friday night and William Jewell on Saturday afternoon.
