KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Missouri S&T was able to hold off a late comeback effort by Rockhurst, getting two key baskets late in the game from
Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) and a defensive stop in the final seconds to win its first Great Lakes Valley Conference women's basketball game of the season, taking a 77-75 decision from the Hawks at Mason-Halpin Fieldhouse.
With the Miners trailing by two following a basket by Madeline Ronshausen with 2:39 to play, Baylor scored on S&T's next trip down the floor to tie the score at 75. Rockhurst turned the ball over on its next possession, then Baylor scored again with 1:32 to go to put the Miners into the lead.
S&T got defensive stops on Rockhurst's final three possessions, including a miss on a potential game-winning three-point shot by Marisa Lowe with time running out to secure the win.
The victory put the Miners back over the .500 mark at 5-4 on the year and evened their GLVC record at 1-1. Rockhurst dropped to 5-6 and 1-2 in the GLVC.
After
Ashley Harvey (Raytown, Mo./Raytown) scored the initial basket of the game for the Miners, the Hawks ran off 12 straight points to take an early 10-point lead. S&T made just one of its first 10 shots from the field before a Baylor jumper at the 4:44 mark of the quarter ended the field goal drought.
The Miners answered the Hawks' 12-0 run by outscoring Rockhurst 19-7 over the balance of the quarter, taking the lead for good in the opening half when Baylor hit two free throws in the waning seconds of the first period and extending it to as much as 11 before ending the first half with a 44-34 lead.
Baylor was dominant on the inside on the defensive end in the first half, blocking six shots and pulling down eight rebounds during the first 20 minutes as well as disrupting the Hawks' offensive attack inside, as Rockhurst made just 34.4 percent of its shots in the half and only five-of-20 from inside the three-point line.
However, the Hawks quickly erased most of the deficit in the opening moments of the third quarter, scoring the first nine points and later took their first lead since the opening quarter when Ronshausen hit two free throws at the 1:57 mark. Rockhurst would eventually build the lead to three before a
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) three-pointer tied the score at 58 before the period ended.
The Miners regained the lead in the fourth quarter and either held it or were tied for all but the 22 seconds after the Ronshausen basket that preceded the two late Baylor field goals that decided the contest.
Baylor recorded her third double-double of the season with a career-high tying 16 points and 11 rebounds, while also adding a season-high six blocked shots – all coming in the first half. All five S&T starters scored in double figures, as Durk had 14 points,
Ashley Harvey (Raytown, Mo./Raytown) finished with 12 including six in the fourth quarter and
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) and
Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) had 12 points apiece.
Ronshausen led Rockhurst with 19 points as the Hawks finished the game by shooting just 41.8 percent from the field to S&T's 47.5 percent mark.
Missouri S&T will head to Liberty, Mo., to face William Jewell Saturday at 1 p.m. The Cardinals (6-5, 0-3 GLVC) lost 71-46 to fourth-ranked Drury Thursday night.
