Offensive struggles doom Miners at William Jewell

LIBERTY, Mo. – A slow start doomed Missouri S&T's women's basketball team Saturday afternoon as William Jewell ended the Miners' three-game winning streak with a 78-63 Great Lakes Valley Conference win at the Mabee Center.

The Cardinals led right from the outset, taking a 10-point lead in the early going.  S&T did not get its first field goal until the 4:46 mark of the first quarter on a lay-up by Michaela Davis (Keokuk, Iowa/Keokuk) and trailed by seven at the end of the period following a three-pointer late in the quarter by Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) --- which would be the only shot from beyond the arc the Miners made in the first half.

S&T still trailed by seven midway through the second quarter following Ashley Harvey's (Raytown, Mo./Raytown) jumper in the lane, but back-to-back three-pointers by Kiara Bradley sparked a late first half run by the Cardinals as they took a lead that grew to as much as 21 before time expired in the half.

The Miners made just 36 percent of their shots in the first half while the Cardinals warmed up in the second quarter, hitting eight-of-14 from the field and five three-pointers along the way to hold a 42-23 advantage.

Jewell's lead grew to as much as 26 in the third quarter as the Miners made just four-of-14 from the field and went better than six minutes without a field goal.

S&T finished the afternoon shooting only 42.3 percent from the field, with one bright spot on the offensive end being the shooting of Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones), who tallied a career-high 16 points and made four of S&T's seven three-point baskets in five attempts.  Rodriguez was joined in double figures by Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic), who had the other three treys and finished with 11 points.

Kiara Bradley and Antoniette Mussorici had 13 points apiece to lead four Cardinals in double figures.  Jewell came into the game averaging just 5.3 three-point baskets per game, but hit 10 in Saturday's contest.

Missouri S&T returns home Thursday for a date with 20th-ranked Lewis at Gibson Arena.  Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.
