ROLLA, Mo. – The night started out well for Missouri S&T's women's basketball team Thursday, as the Miners scored the first nine points and 11 of the first 13 to take an early nine-point lead against 17
th-ranked Lewis at Gibson Arena.
However, things went in the opposite direction in a hurry, as after S&T took that initial 11-2 lead, a scoring drought that lasted nearly 10 minutes coupled with a 24-0 run by the Flyers put Lewis squarely in control of the Great Lakes Valley Conference game it would win 74-48.
The Miners (5-6, 1-3 GLVC) jumped out to the early 9-0 lead on a put-back by
Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay), a three-pointer by
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) and two jumpers by
Ashley Harvey (Raytown, Mo./Raytown).
Alex Kerr's (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) lay-in at the 6:30 mark of the first quarter put &T up 11-2, but that would be the last points scored by the Miners until 7:09 remained in the second quarter.
By the time
Michaela Davis (Keokuk, Iowa/Keokuk) ended the drought by making one-of-two at the free throw line, the Flyers had taken a 26-11 lead in the game and they would lead by as much as 25 in the opening half before taking a 43-20 lead to the break.
The Flyers (13-1, 4-0 GLVC) hit 50 percent of their shots in the first half and held S&T to just 26 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes of play. The Miners would outscore Lewis in the third quarter and were outscored 31-28 over the entire second half.
Kerr would finish with 15 points as the only Miner in double figures, going seven-of-nine from the floor and also finishing with five rebounds and two blocked shots.
S&T held the GLVC's top scorer, Jessica Kelliher, to a season-low 13 points, but Rachel Hinders picked up the slack as she scored a game-high 20 to lead the Flyers. Lewis shot 42.1 percent for the game to S&T's 31.1 percent and Raley's three-pointer in the early stages was the only one Miners made in 14 tries.
Missouri S&T will wrap up its weekend at home Saturday when it hosts Indianapolis (6-8, 0-4 GLVC) at 1 p.m. at Gibson Arena. UIndy lost 77-47 Thursday night at third-ranked Drury.
