KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Missouri S&T's swimming team wrapped up its regular season schedule Friday by defeating Truman State 123-73 in a dual meet, thanks to wins in eight of the 11 events contested in in the final tune-up before next month's Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships.
S&T got two individual event wins from
Ethan Shih (Papillion, NE/Papillion-LaVista), as he won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:57.09 and 200-yard backstroke in 1:54.12 and from
Tim Samuelsen (Stavanger, Norway/St. Svithun VGS), who recorded wins in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:34 flat and 500-freestyle in 4:47.04.
The Miners also got wins Friday from
Marco Flores (San Pedro Sula, Honduras/SERAN Private Bilingual School) in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.31 seconds
Aaron Taske (Fairfield, OH/Saint Xavier) in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:03.21,
Morgan Meyer (Ruston, LA/Ruston) in the 100-freestyle in 47.06 seconds and the 400-yard medley relay team of Shih, Josh Umrysh,
Colten Becker (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley Northwest) and
Chris Betts (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch), who won in a time of 3:27.45.
Along with those eight official event wins, the Miners also had the best time in two other events late in the meet that were swam as exhibitions. Those performances came from Alex Chavez in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:09.48 and the 400-yard freestyle relay quartet of
Kevin McPherson (Oakdale, MN/Tartan), Taske, Betts and Meyer in a time of 3:08.33.
Alex Graham (Parker, TX/Homeschooled) took second in the 1,000-freestyle in 10:04.15 and 500-freestyle in 4:53.68, while runner-up performances were also recorded by Taske in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:42.90, Betts in the 50-freestyle in 21.33 seconds,
Andy Huffman (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit) in the 200-IM in 1:59.48, McPherson in the 200-butterfly in 1:56.23, Becker in the 100-freestyle in 47.24 seconds and
Jared Dachroeden (St. Louis, MO/Parkway North) in the 200-backstroke in 1:55.04.
Third place finishes Friday came from McPherson in the 200-freestyle in 1:45.49, Flores in the 100-freestyle in 47.51 seconds and
Dylan Friesz (Round Rock, TX/Hutto) in the 200-backstroke in 1:59.02, while the Miners' second 400-medley relay team of Friesz, Chavez, Huffman and
Cole Akal (Alton, IL/Alton) also took third in 3:34.82.
The GLVC Championships get underway Feb. 6 in Crawfordsville, Ind.
